The Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar Green Dial, Now in Red Gold

With over 20 years of production, the Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar has become a true pillar in the brand’s collection, being seen as a classic and an inescapable model for who wants to enter the world of GO. Yet, this classism was reflected in its style, with this typical German austerity – nothing wrong here, on the contrary – found on the normal edition. Yet, for a couple of years now, the brand has decided to bring something new and fresh to this Saxon icon, with multiple colourful editions, such as blue-gold, salmon or green. Until now offered in steel, the latter comes back this year in a more luxurious version, as Glashütte Original presents the PanoMaticLunar green dial in a red gold case.

With its off-centred display where time is indicated on one side of the dial, while the moon phase indicator and the signature Panorama Date balance this unusual asymmetry, the PanoMaticLunar is a watch that is immediately recognizable as part of the so-called German School of watchmaking. Extremely classic yet original at the same time, there’s a method behind this individuality of the display, which has always been the main reason for the beauty of this watch. The slightly more poetic pendant to the PanoReserve, it is also a more practical edition equipped with an automatic movement, which is of course crafted in a typical Saxon way.

Mostly known for its traditional silver dial and steel case combination, there have been far more variants presented by the brand. Even today, Glashütte Original still offers the PanoMaticLunar in steel with a blue or a ruthenium-coloured dial, as well as 18k red gold models with silver, black or blue dial. But what matters is the shift done by the brand a couple of years ago, when it launched the steel model with a salmon-opaline coloured dial, followed last year by the original green edition. So not only the display was special, but the whole watch became more original too.

This year, the PanoMaticLunar gets a striking colour combination, as the green dial can now be ordered with a luxurious and warm 18k red gold case. Specifications of the watch remain identical though, with a 40mm case showing brushed and polished surfaces, and overall a slightly robust design with strong lugs and a 12.7mm thickness. The watch features sapphire crystals on both sides and is water-resistant to 50m.

The green dial that we’ve discovered last year is back here. The colour, named forest green, is combined with a so-called dégradé effect, as the periphery of the dial is darker than the bright, saturated centre. Matching the case, the applied markers and lance-shaped hands (with luminous inserts) are also executed in gold. The display remains that of all PanoMaticLunar watches, with two complications, namely the moon phase with gold-coloured Moon and the signature Panorama Date with two, non-overlapping discs.

Under the sapphire caseback is the brand’s in-house Calibre 90-02, a very attractive movement typical from the Saxon production. It features a 3/4 plate, an off-centred rotor with 21k gold mass and a hand-engraved duplex swan-neck fine adjustment, combined with a screw balance. The decoration is very appealing, with stripes, blued screws and chamfered bridges. This automatic movement runs at 4Hz and stores up to 42 hours of power reserve.

The final touch to this edition is brought by a glossy Louisiana Alligator leather strap in green, which is closed by a fold fastener or a pin buckle, both in 18k red gold.
