The 37.05 is the first MING watch to come with a date and moon phase display.
What started in 2017 as a horological project of the talented watch photographer Ming Thein has turned into a bit of a nonconformist brand with a solid fanbase. MING’s unconventional yet shapely design ethos has become a hallmark feature of the brand. With the discontinuation of the 17-series case, the 37-series is here to take the reins. Listening to its fanbase and seizing the moment when it felt right, this is the MING 37.05 Moonphase, which also includes a date display.
Any MING watch is quite easy to spot from afar, which is impressive given the extremely broad selection of watches available today. It’s not easy to stand out from the masses, but somehow MING has found its niche and ran with it. The brand shows immense creativity in design, playing with colours and materials, as well as indications.
The MING 37.05 Moonphase comes in a slightly redesigned stainless steel case measuring 38mm across and 11.9mm in height. The shape is quintessential MING, with brushed and polished finishing. The dial features a two-layer metal and sapphire construction, with laser-etched details. The index “ring” is made with HyCeram, a ceramic-based material and is fully luminous. Typical MING-style hands indicate the hours and minutes and are coated with Super-LumiNova. Note the unusual design of the moon phase, also luminous, by the way, and the almost “ghosted” date display underneath.
MING has chosen a manual-winding Sellita SW288 movement. The bridges have been skeletonised and finished in an anthracite tone. Some components are finished in rhodium with circular brushing. The combination of materials and finishings on the movement are attractive and add a lot of contrast and depth to it. It runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and provides 38 hours of power reserve. It also has a quick-set feature for both the moon phase and the date.
The MING 37.05 Moonphase is worn on a Barennia leather strap in black with a special “flying blade” buckle that allows the strap-end to be tucked underneath, eliminating the need for traditional keepers. The price for the watch is CHF 4,950 excluding taxes and can be ordered directly through MING from 1 PM GMT on the 25th of November for existing customers (150 pieces) and from 1 PM GMT on the 26th of November for new clients (350 pieces).
