Baume & Mercier launched a new limited edition Capeland, exclusively for the US and exclusively available at Tourneau stores. Although we haven’t published about the new Baume & Mercier Capeland, I must admit that I love the looks of the new Capeland that was officially released in January of this year.
Originally launched with a black or white dial, the new US exclusive sports a copper coloured dial that looks particularly handsome. This is a limited edition of just 250 pieces and they will be in selected Tourneau stores as of October 2012. The Capeland ref. 10088 is an automatic flyback chronograph with a blue tachymeter and black telemeter. It comes in a 44 mm large stainless steel case with a gorgeous copper-coloured dial that is visible through a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. On the dial are the two chronograph registers and the date, positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock.
There has been some discussion on the internet about this piece and whether the price tag is justified for this watch, after our friends of Hodinkee published a review of the new Capeland. While the normal models in stainless steel are available for around $ 7,5k the new US exclusive is available for $7,900 USD. I’ll let everyone make their own assessment of the price/product, but before you judge too fast it might be good to compare it to other pieces with another flyback chronograph like the Dodane Type 23 that we reviewed here.
Inside ticks an automatic chronograph with flyback function, that is exclusively produced by La Joux-Perret for for Baume & Mercier (La Joux-Perret caliber 8147-2 Flyback chronograph). Maybe not a real in-house movement, but still a very nice chronograph with a Flyback function. All I can say is that I just love the looks and lovely details, like the gorgeous dial, nice chronograph pushers and beautiful crown. And of course the Flyback movement!
The La Joux-Perret Flyback Chronograph is visible through a sapphire crystal case back and tts case is polished and satin-finished. The Capeland comes on a black alligator strap with a pin buckle.

Why do I see these watches as just a nice looking case (if u do like it), period? Where’s the innovation?
It’ all a matter of price, Ahmed. Not everyone can or wants to spent tens of thousands on a highly innovative timepiece. Most watch brands use movements that are available and at best design their own case and dial. This has always been the case. Just a few brands design their own movement and even less brands create something really innovative.
It’s the smartest from the series, loved the brown dial with brown date ring,
but this salmis is really superb too.
