Breguet and the Race for Water Foundation just announced that they will join forces to support the Odyssey 2017 – 2021 on its mission for the oceans. The Race for Water Foundation is a charity dedicated to the preservation of water and the ocean in particular in view of the threat from plastic pollution.
With the ‘Odyssey’, the Race for Water is embarking on an oceanic tour to raise awareness for environmental sustainability and to provide concrete, technology based solutions for the preservation of the ocean. The tour will consist of 35 stopovers all around the world for a crew sailing a pioneering energy vessel powered by a mix of solar, hydrogen, and wind (kite) sources. The partnership was announced on Saturday 24th 2018 at Baselworld in the presence of Marc A. Hayek, President of Montres Breguet, and Marco Simeoni, President of the Race for Water Foundation.
Beyond the important cause and its call for action, the partnership is all the more relevant as Breguet history is deeply connected with the seas. In 1814, Abraham Louis Breguet was appointed a member of the Bureau des longitudes by King Louis XVIII. In 1815, he was awarded the official title of chronometer maker to the French Royal Navy – a prestigious and crucial title as marine chronometers were of capital importance for navigators by making it possible to calculate ships’ positions at sea.
In celebration of this partnership, Breguet has created a special edition of its new Marine 5517 reference for the crew embarking for the oceanic tour. Fashioned out of lightweight Titanium, it features a custom blue dial with Roman numerals engraved with the Race for Water vessel. Its clous de Paris guilloche motif reminds of the ship’s solar panels.
The reference 5517 was introduced on the occasion of Baselworld 2018 as part of the revamped Breguet Marine collection, according to the contemporary design codes introduced last year, in particular with the Marine Équation Marchante 5887. 40 mm in diameter, the round case features a fluted case-band and is water resistant to 100 meters. It is powered by the automatic caliber 777A with hours, minutes, seconds and date indication. The movement can be admired though the exhibition caseback with a finish inspired by boat decks. The rotor is personalized for the Race for Water.
The Breguet 5517 The Race for Water Special Edition is worn on a blue alligator strap secured with a folding buckle. It is for the moment available for the ship’s crew only, but could later be offered to the public. For more information, please visit www.breguet.com.
