The Chopard L.U.C Time Traveler One Black (Live Pics & Price)
Chopard's L.U.C world timer reappears in a new monochrome suit with a matte ceramised titanium case.
Chopard introduced the L.U.C Time Traveler One in 2016. Marking the first world timer to join the L.U.C collection, the Time Traveler One shows the time in all 24 time zones simultaneously and is operated by an internal 24-hour ring. The standout feature of Chopard’s globetrotter’s watch is the Super Compressor-style case with two crowns and an internal rotating bezel, a case largely associated with instrument dive watches. For 2021, Chopard revisits its popular Time Traveler One in monochrome with a matte ceramised titanium case in a limited run of 250 pieces.
World Time at a glance
With current travel restrictions in place, global travel might be a distant dream for most of us. However, world time watches are also useful for conducting business around the world and making sure you don’t wake up your business partner in Taipei in the wee hours of the morning.
The information relayed on the grey galvanic dial is easy to consult and arranged in a series of concentric discs emanating from the central area with a handmade vertical satin-brushed finishing and the inscription ‘L.U.C Chopard Chronometer’ in white. The first grey disc with white Arabic odd numerals and a short arrow-tipped hand indicates the date; the second disc, which corresponds to the hours and minutes (local time), is also grey but distinguished by a snailed background with a mix of applied indices and Arabic numerals painted with Super-LumiNova. The Dauphine-style hands used across the L.U.C collection are also filled with Super-LumiNova and adjusted via the crown at 2 o’clock.
The next disc is a 24-hour graduated ring, which operates in conjunction with the outermost grey circular disc with the reference cities of the 24 main time zones. Picked out in black and light grey to distinguish night and day times, the 24-hour disc is manipulated via the crown at 4 o’clock. When the city for the local time zone is set at the 12 o’clock position, all the time zones around the globe are synchronised, and no further adjustment is needed.
Ceramised titanium Case
Sportier and more contemporary than the former iterations in steel, rose gold and platinum, the 42mm case of the L.U.C Time Traveler One Black is crafted from ceramised grade 5 titanium. Renowned for its strength and lightness, titanium is an optimum case material for a sporty travel watch. For this latest version, Chopard uses ceramised titanium, an innovative material used in aerospace, automotive and medical component manufacturing. Ceramised titanium is obtained by oxidising surface layers of titanium at extreme temperatures using electro-plasma technology resulting in superior hardness (700 Vickers) and additional resilience to wear and corrosion.
The Super Compressor dive watch case with two crowns was patented by case manufacturer Ervin Piquerez and popular from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Although the L.U.C Time Traveler One Black relies on two crowns, it is not a 600m dive watch and offers just 50m water-resistance.
Automatic L.U.C 01.05-L
Made in-house at Chopard’s manufacture in Fleurier, the automatic COSC-certified calibre 01.05-L with its integrated world timer made its debut with the 2016 Time Traveler One. Beating at 28,800vph/4Hz, the movement has a 60-hour power reserve and is hand-finished with chamfered bridges and Côtes de Genève decoration.
The resilient matching black rubber strap is vegan-certified and displays a fabric-like pattern. In line with Chopard’s commitment to sustainable luxury, the strap complies with REACH certification.
