Chronoswiss Regulator Classic Carbon Racer

We recently went hands-on with the new Chronoswiss Regulator Classic collection, first introduced at Baselworld 2019 as a slight evolution of the original Regulator Classic. A new model has now joined the line with motorsport inspiration and a speedometer vibe, injecting a bit more adrenaline into the already edgier new pieces. With new dial elements appropriated from an automotive cockpit, the Regulator Classic Carbon Racer seems to want as much time on the track as it does on your wrist. Let’s take a closer look.

A bold, sporty regulator to pay tribute to Chronoswiss’ partnerships with both Audi and Alfa Romeo.

The stainless steel case of the Chronoswiss Regulator Classic Carbon Racer is the same as the others models in the Classic collection, with a 41mm diameter and 12.7mm height – the smaller 37mm option isn’t offered here. The polished bezel and knurled rings on both ends of the case are unchanged, as are the oversized onion crown and long, sloping lugs. A sapphire crystal with a dual anti-reflective coating covers the dial, while a second sapphire window displays the movement on the caseback. Like all others in the collection, the case is water-resistant to 100 metres.

The dial is the real standout feature of the Chronoswiss Regulator Classic Carbon Racer, with racing motifs throughout. Eye-catching black carbon fibre surrounds the two sub-dials, which themselves have taken on a racing vibe. The top hour sub-dial, larger than the smaller seconds counterpart, has large white Arabic numerals replacing the more conservative Roman numerals. The same “solar” guilloché pattern fills the interior, but the bottom seconds sub-dial is now open-worked to reveal gears on the regulator module. This is similar to the Flying Regulator Open Gear and inspired here by a racecar rim. A red line curves upward from 7 to 9 o’clock on the hour sub-dial, creating a tachometer aesthetic, while a red minutes track coupled with the central minutes hand looks like a speedometer. A racing red seconds hand keeps the vibe going, while the Trigono-style hour and minute hands have bright Super-LumiNova inlays.

The heart of the Regulator Classic Carbon Racer is the Calibre C.295 automatic, featuring 27 jewels, 28,800vph (4Hz) and a 42-hour power reserve. It’s a time-only movement based on an ETA calibre, but the regulator module is both designed and produced in-house. When viewed from the exhibition caseback, the movement is decorated with Côtes de Genève and perlage, along with an engraved rhodium-plated rotor, polished pallet lever, escape wheel and screws.

The stainless steel bracelet features the new design with large, brushed central links and narrow polished links at the ends, upgraded from the original “rice” bracelet on the older line. A sporty rubber strap is also an option. 

With partnerships with both Audi and Alfa Romeo, Chronoswiss is no stranger to motorsport and this newest Regulator Classic model is a testament to that. Retail price will be CHF 4,750. More information at Chronoswiss.com.
