An elaborate blue dial with retrograde date joins the Historiador collection.
Cuervo y Sobrinos, the Swiss brand with Cuban roots, welcomes another member to its growing Historiador collection. One of the brand’s most popular collections, the stylized case of the Historiador takes its profile from an original Cuervo y Sobrinos model from the 1950s. In the past year or so, we’ve seen the Historiador Pequeños Segundos (small seconds), a chronograph version of the Historiador with a restored Landeron calibre, a Flameante version with a “flaming” salmon dial and even a Luna Negra edition with a full calendar and moon phases. The latest Historiador is the Retrógrado model with a retrograde date display. Accompanying the retrograde date are a power reserve display at 6 o’clock and an unusual date display on two scales directly opposite the date.
Havana mood
We recently covered the brand’s remarkable history that started life in Havana in 1882 and resuscitated in the late 1990s. Cuervos y Sobrinos is all about recreating the Golden Days of La Habana in the 1950s when socialites and celebrities flocked to this exotic island playground. The Historiador collection evokes the heyday of Havana with its vintage dress watch profile and distinctive lugs that could have been inspired by the tailfins of American cars on a sunset cruise down the Malecon in the 1950s. Crafted in stainless steel, the case measures 40mm and has a height of 11.25mm. It is protected by a double curved sapphire crystal to consolidate the retro mood. The exhibition caseback allows a view of the movement, and the case is water-resistant to 30m.
Cobalt blue dial
The cobalt blue dial is flamboyantly decorated with contrasting finishings that add personality to the watch and aid legibility. Starting at the periphery is a silver railway minutes/seconds track in silver with prominent silver Roman numerals at III, VI and IX and the Cuervo y Sobrinos applied shield at noon. The chapter ring for the eight pyramid-shaped indices is snailed, while the dial’s interior is decorated with a Clous de Paris or hobnail pattern.
The retrograde date is positioned at 3 o’clock, featuring odd numbers from 1 to 31 in silver. The fun part of a retrograde date is how the hand jumps back to 1 when the last few minutes of the 31st day elapse. Opposite the retrograde date is the day of the week indicator placed on two separate tracks – Sat, Sun, Mon on the shorter track and Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri on the longer track above. A silver hand uses its shorter end to indicate the shorter track and the longer end to point to the days of the week positioned above. The hour and minutes hands are also silver but treated with Super-LumiNova to enhance legibility.
Automatic movement
The beating heart of the Historiador Retrógrado is CYS 6330 movement based on an ETA 2892-A2 automatic. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the power reserve is 42 hours, and the rotor is decorated with Cuervo y Sobrinos branding.
