The De Bethune DB28XP Meteorite

Unveiled in 2020, the DB28XP distils the essence of De Bethune into an extra-flat version of the emblematic DB28. Three models were originally presented, including one with a tourbillon regulator. For 2021, a new model joins the collection, echoing some of the themes that have become the brand’s hallmarks. Here’s the new De Bethune DB28XP meteorite.

Cosmic Composition

As its name suggests, the dial of this new DB28XP is made of meteorite. It is not the first time De Bethune and Denis Flageollet use ferrous meteorite in their horological experimentations. In this instance, they have used a new kind of meteorite to craft its dial: Muonionalusta Meteorite. Composed mainly of iron and nickel, it is distinguished by the geometrical lines of its 60° angle cross-hatched pattern. Each dial features a distinctive texture, making each watch special and unique. But the brand’s mastery of metal thermal oxidation processes has enabled it to raise the level of complexity. The meteorite dial has been blued and fitted with a ‘starry sky’, another De Bethune recurring theme and technique. A myriad of tiny gold pins a hand-driven into the dial and customers can even choose the constellation or sky of their choice! Altogether, this creates a captivating optical effect enhanced by the changing reflections of the meteorite.

Zirconium Case

This cosmic composition is presented in an ultra-light, polished black zirconium case. The black colour of zirconium is achieved by exposing the metal to high heat – another evidence of the De Bethune’s mastery of thermal oxidation. 43mm in diameter, it features the brand’s distinctive floating lugs and crown at 12 o’clock. As expected with this XP collection, the case is pleasantly thin at 7.2mm. 

Hand-wound Calibre DB2115V7

An opening into the dial at 6 o’clock allows discovering the beating heart of the masterfully crafted movement inside. Ticking at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the hand-wound calibre DB2115v7 boasts 6 days of power reserve when fully wound. Its balance wheel is made of titanium and features gold adjustment screws. It is fitted with a De Bethune hairspring with a flat terminal curve. The escapement wheel is in silicon.

The De Bethune DB28XP Meteorite is worn on an alligator strap with alligator lining. The pin buckle is in black zirconium too. A limited edition of 10 pieces, it retails for CHF 120,000.
