Delma reinforces its professional dive watch with an even stronger, more water-resistant case.
Delma might not be the most famous of brands, but it has history and credibility when it comes to dive watches and launched its first dive watch in 1969. More interesting are recent developments of the brand, which include a robust, tool-oriented piece called the Blue Shark. As part of the Basel Watch Week, Delma introduces the third generation of its instrument watch, an evolution of the watch we reviewed here. Meet the Delma Blue Shark III, now with a 4,000m water-resistant case.
The story of Delma and dive watches goes back to 1969, with the launch of its first underwater piece. However, the main piece of interest is the first generation of Blue Shark, which was presented in 2011, allowing Delma to enter the small circle of brands capable of manufacturing a watch with 3,000m water-resistance. In 2016, the brand introduced the second-generation Blue Shark, mainly a visual evolution. Celebrating 50 years of marine watches in 2019, Delma presents the third generation, with an improved case and enhanced water-resistance.
This Delma Blue Shark III isn’t just a visual update of the preceding model. It has been deeply rethought to offer greater robustness – which didn’t prevent the brand from retouching the aesthetics of the watch. While the dial keeps the same bold hands with their bright yellow colour and the same applied indexes and numerals, it’s now untextured for a cleaner look. The dial is available in three colours: black, orange and blue.
The diving bezel has also been slightly redesigned and is offered in two versions – one in brushed steel with an engraved scale in orange and one in black DLC-coated steel (stronger than the PVD used before), also with an orange 60-minute scale. The bezel is, of course, unidirectional and features 120 (smooth) clicks.
Compared to the second generation, the new Delma Blue Shark III introduces several novelties regarding its case. First and mainly, water-resistance has been improved to now reach 4,000 metres. An impressive depth that isn’t so common in the industry (especially in the price range where this Delma is situated). The crown guard has been redesigned too, with smoother lines. The case still features a helium relief valve at 9 o’clock and retains its large dimensions of 47mm x 18.5mm.
The Blue Shark III is powered by a tried-and-tested automatic ETA 2824. It is fitted on a solid steel bracelet. The presentation box also contains a rubber strap (new design, with Delma logo embossed) and a dedicated tool to easily switch between the bracelet and the strap. This is done by the specifically designed screws (which are more reliable than the previous hexagonal screws).
The Delma Blue Shark III will be a limited edition of 500 pieces with a steel bezel (CHF 1,990) and 500 pieces with a DLC bezel (CHF 2,090). A reasonable price for a robust diving instrument. For more information, please visit www.delma.ch.
