The Swedish micro-brand is back with a new entry-level offering.
A few months ago, we told you about the new Calypso Premium timepiece from Swedish micro-brand, E.C. Andersson, which at the time was seeking funding on Kickstarter. After a very successful campaign, the company is back with a new model in the Calypso range, called the Calypso Sport. Pitched as an entry-level model in the Calypso family, it offers many of the same aesthetic touches as its elder sibling but with a few variations to keep the price a little more wallet-friendly. Available now for pre-order on the E.C. Andersson website, we thought we’d take a closer look at what you get for your money.
The first thing you’ll probably notice about the Calypso Sport is that it shares the same case as the Calypso Premium, which is rated water-resistant to 100m. Made from sandblasted and polished 316L steel, it measures 40mm x 9.85mm high and looks quite nice on the wrist. The simple black dial is dual-textured and embossed all over with the E.C.A logo, giving it a bit of personality and making an otherwise plain dial stand-out. Personally, I’m not one for heavy-branding and so I wouldn’t mind seeing the dial without the embossing or perhaps with a different pattern, but I don’t think it detracts from the overall look of the watch and it probably won’t be that obvious once you’re wearing the watch.
Time is displayed centrally (hours, minutes and running seconds) via baton-style hands, with ice-blue lume for easy night-time reading. The indices are the same as on the Premium version, which I really like. Adding some depth to the dial, they are slightly elevated and are polished and bevelled for that extra touch of class, with B3 ice-blue illumination used again. Completing the dial is a date window at 3 o’clock.
The date disc is white, which I’m sure will be somewhat contentious as many people prefer it to be the same colour as the dial and in this case, I’m inclined to agree. It’s not a deal-breaker of course, and one could make that argument that it matches well with the white indices, but still I think I’d prefer if it was black.
Inside, hidden behind a solid case back, is the main reason for the reduction in price. Instead of using a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement like the Calypso Premium, the Sport is powered by a Japanese-made, hand-regulated Miyota 9015 automatic movement, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. It’s a familiar workhorse and one that will get the job done, whilst still keeping the price down.
Offered on your choice of a matching steel bracelet with butterfly clasp, or crocodile-grained calf leather with uni-moulded E.C.A steel buckle, the Calypso Sport will be limited to 220 pieces. If you jump on the 21-day pre-order early, there are “early-orders” pieces available from just EUR 420, which is a substantial discount on the final expected retail price.
