Pre-Baselworld 2016 – Introducing the Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph, with in-house flyback movement (with live pics & price)

Eterna is known for some sporty and robust watches. Some of the timepieces of the collections are iconic for vintage lovers and the KonTiki is certainly the most famous of them all. This collection is a tribute to the 1947 boat exploration led by a Norwegian scientist, on board of the ‘Kon Tiki’. Since 1962, Eterna uses this context for the Super KonTiki collection. Already interesting as a dive watch, like introduced last year, Eterna will go a step further this year, as a new chronograph edition is about to come… and with an in-house flyback chronograph. The Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph is a vintage-inspired watch, with a case shaped like 1970s watches made by the brand – a shape that could be found in the 2015 diver edition we already showed to you. The Eterna Super KonTiki was the brand’s first dive watch with a rotating bezel and with 200m water resistance. It came with all the classical attributes of a dive watch: a rotating bezel with a large and legible 60-minute scale, a black dial with massive luminous indexes and a robust stainless steel case. The case this new edition, with its 45mm diameter and specific shape – with integrated lugs and tonneau profile – pays tribute to the 1970s dive watches made by Eterna. This year, the brand adds a chronograph movement to the equation – without removing the diving capacities of the collection.

The 2016 Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph features all the classical attributes of the antique editions on its dial too. It comes with the specific triangular indexes, so dear to Eterna, some large hands filled with luminous material and a rotating bezel with 60-minute diving scale. Even with its chronograph function, it remains water resistant to 200m. The chronograph functions are classically displayed via a central second hand and a 30-minute counter at 3. Finally, the dial features a small second at 9 and a date, printed in white on a black disc (matching the dial) at 6. However, on the contrary of some watches produced by the brand, this Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph isn’t coming with an outsourced movement but instead a movement designed and manufactured internally.

The Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph is featured with the Calibre 3916A. This movement is part of the 39 family of Eterna movements. Thus, we’re not talking about an integrated chronograph movement, developed entirely to be fitted with such a function but instead, we’re in front of a normal movement on which a chronograph module has been added. However, good point here is that the module is placed on the movement side and not on the dial side, making it visible from the sapphire caseback. This Calibre 3916A is relying on nice solutions, like the use of a flyback function (pause, reset and new start of the chronograph by pressing only once the pusher at 4) as well as a column wheel. This automatic calibre beats at 28,800Vph and boasts 60 hours of power reserve. It is finished pleasantly, with circular Geneva stripes, bead blasting and blued screws.

This new Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph will be available in two editions, one with black rubber strap and the other with metallic Milanese bracelet, both with black dial and white indexes. This rugged dive watch, with interesting in-house movement and pleasant vintage design will be priced at 4,600 Swiss Francs / 4,650 Euros / 4,700 USD on rubber strap and 4,800 Swiss Francs / 4,850 Euros / 4,900 USD on metallic bracelet.
