Formex Essence ThirtyNine Automatic Chronometer
By popular demand, Formex scales down its bestselling model.
The trend for oversized watches seems to be over. The buzzword in the watch industry is smaller. Launched in 2018, the Formex Essence is a sporty, casual all-rounder that marked an important step in the design language of a brand known for crafting rugged action watches. Following requests from its customers, the brand now scales down the model and adds a new 39mm edition, next to the existing 43mm iteration. Meet the Formex Essence ThirtyNine Automatic Chronometer.
As its name suggests, the new Formex Essence ThirtyNine is presented in a 39mm case, which is fitted with the brand’s signature case suspension system for better shock absorption. Fashioned out of 316L stainless steel, it combines satin-brushed and polished surfaces in a sharply designed case. One of the defining features of the new model is its horizontally embossed dial. To achieve the crisp lines and sharp angles, the grooves are CNC-machined into the dial individually. Several colour options are available: blue, black, green or gradient grey.
Turning the watch over, the exhibition caseback offers a view of the automatic movement with its openworked oscillating weight. The Essence Thirtynine is powered by the tried-and-tested Sellita SW 200-1. However, here it comes in a COSC-certified version, as the precision of each movement has been controlled during 15 days by the Swiss Chronometer testing institute. It boasts 42 hours of power reserve.
The watch is available on multiple strap options, or on a metallic bracelet. Leather straps are available in multiple colours, matching or contrasting with the dial. The stainless steel bracelet features screw links. Its buckle features a practical patented micro-extension mechanism to ensure a perfect fit. The leather strap versions are secured to the wrist by the brand’s patented carbon fibre composite folding clasp, also with fine-adjustment system. The strap and bracelet all come with a practical quick-release system to swap in seconds without the use of a tool.
The Formex Essence ThirtyNine Automatic Chronometer is priced at USD 1,280 on a leather strap or USD 1,390 on a stainless steel bracelet, offering good value for your money. It is now available for pre-order on the brand’s website – Formex sells direct to customers only – with watches expected to ship as of February 2021.

I’m pretty excited about this release and have ordered the grey dégradé version from Teddy Baldassarre who is now an AD for Formex.
