Girard-Perregaux 1966 Blue dial in a 41mm case – Specs and Price
We loved it in 38mm! The Girard-Perregaux 1966 in pink gold with a blue dial was one of our Baselworld 2014 favorites. We had the exact same feeling after spending a few weeks with this superb watch strapped on the wrist. This rather small, clean but extremely elegant dress timepiece is clearly a success. GP just decided to add some freshness to the package with new materials and a new size. Here is the Girard-Perregaux 1966 Blue dial in a 41mm case.
We told you when we reviewed the 38mm edition, the 1966 with blue dial is an extremely appealing dress watch (clean, elegant, slim, perfectly sized) with a very interesting colour combination, a deep blue dial together with a pink gold case. For a month, it had been a loyal fellow, able to fit a business outfit or a casual Sunday wear. It was hard to find some defaults to this timepiece. However, two main flaws had to be pointed out: a small movement compared to the size of the case and a white date disc. One of them is about to be solved!
Not only the 1966 comes in a new size – 41mm instead of 38mm – but it also features a larger movement. The 38mm edition is coming with a 25mm movement and the back looks slightly empty. For this 41mm version, Girard-Perregaux chose a movement with a 30mm diameter. Instead of relying on the well-known calibre GP3300, this 1966 in 41mm comes with the calibre GP1800. The architecture is different but both have the same very pleasant finish (polished bevelled angles, straight Geneva stripes on the bridges, circular graining on the main plate, gold rotor with circular Geneva Stripes). It also benefits of its size to bring a larger main spring and thus a longer power reserve – 54 hours. And from the back, the show will be also improved, as the movement will fill the case better.
The other novelty concerns the materials used. Alongside the 18k pink gold case, the 1966 blue dial comes now with a 18k white gold case (and a matching pin buckle). The result is a colder atmosphere compared to the pink gold edition. The dial remains extremely beautiful with a great capacity to reflect the ambient light and with superb reflections. The hands and applied indexes are matching the material used for the case.
Comes now the issue of the date. As the movement is larger, the date is positioned further on the dial and thus, brings a more balanced design. However, the date disc remains white – something that is more shocking on the pink gold edition than on the white gold version.
The choice between 38mm or 41mm is extremely personal. We’ll always recommend here, at Monochrome-Watches, to go for the smallest one, more elegant, more discreet and balanced on the wrist. However, we do understand that a 38mm diameter is rather small and could be seen as a lady’s watch (to actual standards) and the 41mm diameter is clearly answers a demand from potential buyers. It is priced at CHF 17,700.
