Jaquet Droz adds a modern, more urban note to its signature model, releasing a new ceramic limited edition of the Grande Seconde. This year, the brand has elected the Grande Seconde Power Reserve, which is not a novelty because there was already a first black limited edition of this model released in 2017. The 2018 versions are presented with either a charcoal grey or a blue dial with matching fabric strap.

Sleek and wonderfully tactile, the ceramic case of the Grande Seconde is rather large at 44mm in diameter. However, the glossy, dark grey ceramic makes it look and wear smaller. It sits comfortably on the wrist thanks to the ergonomically curved lugs. The crown is adorned with the brand’s two stars logo. The watch is water-resistant to 30 meters and the limited edition number is engraved on the caseback.

The dial is embossed with a “Clous de Paris” pattern. However, the tiny pyramidal knobs characteristic of this technique are recessed (and not raised as is usually the case with such motifs). This bas-relief motif on the surface of the dial creates changing light effects and a sense of depth. It contrasts with the black ceramic 8-shaped sub-dial. The hours and minutes are indicated by white Roman numerals, except for the 5-6-7, where the indication overlaps with the Grande Seconde. The hours, minutes and seconds hands are crafted in red gold and the power reserve indicator hand features a black gold treatment.

Inside is the self-winding calibre JD4063-DS. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, this twin barrel movement can store up to 68 hours of power reserve. It shows hours and minutes, a large off-centred seconds counter and the power reserve at 9 o’clock. The calibre JD4063-DS features a dark ruthenium treatment to match the case and is decorated with Geneva stripes. The rotor is fashioned out of 22k gold (while the 2017 edition had a heavy metal rotor). It features a sunray pattern engraved in relief and it is PVD-coated.

The Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Power Reserve Ceramic is released in two limited edition of 28 pieces each. It is complemented with a fabric strap with a texture matching the embossing on the dial. It is secured with a ceramic and PVD-steel folding buckle. Price is set at CHF 17,300 for both models.
