A highly masculine, ultra-bold take on the brand’s Defy collection.
Zenith is expanding its Defy collection yet again, with an even bolder, more masculine look compared to previous releases. The Defy range has been the playground for the brand when it comes to innovation, however. As such, Zenith introduced a whole range of advanced and creative Defy’s in the past few years. For the new Zenith Defy Extreme, the Swiss brand is turning up the testosterone a few notches.
The current style for the Defy collection has been around for a couple of years now and has seen many interpretations and innovations. Whether it being a unique material for the case or a breakthrough new type of oscillator, technical progress is key in the Defy range. Besides technical innovation, Zenith likes to play the creative game with their Defy collection, as evidenced by the Defy 21 Felipe Pantone, Urban Jungle and Ultraviolet. The highly contemporary design is pushed to new limits in the new Defy Extreme.
From the outside, the case has been restyled and looks even sharper than it did before. The size for the case is increased to 45mm, measures 15,4mm thick and comes in either micro-blasted titanium, micro-blasted titanium and polished gold or a mix of brushed, polished and micro-blasted titanium. The construction of the case features a 12-sided ring underneath the bezel that extends to the 12-sided caseback of the watch. The Defy Extreme also features sharper edges on the case, which extends into the construction of the matching bracelet. The pushers for the chronograph are now shrouded by contrasting pieces, matching the material of the 12-side ring other details of the watch.
The micro-blasted titanium version offers a stealthier look to the Defy Extreme, compared to the more easy-going brushed and polished one. The titanium and gold model pushes the bold looks into a whole other direction, one that might not be to everyone’s liking. The theme for the watch continues on the dial side too. For each version, a different finishing of the automatic chronograph movement is selected, in either black, gold or blue. The dial of the Defy Extreme features a lightly tinted sapphire crystal disc with oversized and slightly overlapping counters for the chronograph placed onto it.
Time is indicated by enlarged hands, adding to the robust look of the watch. Running seconds are indicated by a subdial at 9, while the other two subdials are a 60-seconds counter (6 0’clock) and a 30-minute counter (3 o’clock) for the chronograph. On top of that, there is a power reserve indicator. Large faceted hour markers and a 1/100th of a second scale complete the indications on the dial.
In terms of performance, the Defy Extreme does not let down. It is equipped with Zenith’s El Primero 9004 automatic calibre. This movement is equipped with two escapements, one for keeping time which runs at 36,000vph and one for the chronograph which runs at 360,000vph. The second regulating organ is to counter the huge demand for energy from the chronograph function in order to indicate elapsed time down to a hundredth of a second. When engaged, the central chronograph hand makes one full rotation per second. To keep the two independent escapements powered sufficiently, a double-barrel can store up to 50 hours when the chronograph is not engaged. The movement is rated and certified as a chronometer, tested by Time Lab.
Each Zenith Defy Extreme comes on a three-link bracelet in titanium, matched to the finishing of the case. It’s connected with a highly practical interchangeable strap system allowing to swap out the bracelet for the complementary rubber or Velcro strap. All models are water-resistant to 200m. Price for the new Zenith Defy Extreme is CHF 17,900 for the micro-blasted full titanium and brushed/polished titanium models. The titanium and gold edition is priced at CHF 21,900.
