Instrument Critical: Bell & Ross BR 03-94 Carbon Orange
The job of a pilot might be described as 98% boredom and 2% terror. It is that latter figure of urgency, when things go wrong, which demands a pilot’s split-second decisions, quick reflexes, and maintained calm. When time is limited, a pilot must be able to read his instruments quickly. Cockpit instruments use a general black-and-white colour contrast to heighten visibility, communicating information at a glance. Additionally, essential cockpit information appears in orange…
Since the 2005 introduction of the BR 01, Bell & Ross has provided an inimitable watch design inspired by aeronautical instrumentation. New for Baselworld 2014, they release the BR03-94 Carbon Orange, a limited edition of 500 pieces, which incorporates orange for the critical chronograph information.
The case is familiar: square shape, prominent industrial corner screws, and a rough-hewn crown. The indelible image for the brand is the BR01 watch at 46mm, but the younger sibling BR03 arrives at a more versatile 42mm. Inside, an ETA 2894 movement powers the time, date and chronograph function. The black PVD steel case extends the matte-black dial colour, giving the luminescent white and bold orange colours centre stage.
The personality of the BR 03-94 Carbon Orange is its orange color. The bright orange canvas strap has a two-ply construction for added durability; you supply the dirt and grease to moderate the color tone. Beyond the dominant strap and a Ltd. logo on the dial, orange corresponds with the chronograph function. The upper pusher is a steel pusher enclosed by an orange polycarbonate-ABS protective cover.
Under the anti-reflective coated crystal on the dial, the left thirty minute counter has an orange hand to distinguish it from the right small-seconds counter with a white hand. The central chronograph second hand is also orange. Not only is being able to differentiate the chronograph and time-keeping functions critical for aviation, but it also adds to the user-friendly aspect of the watch.
If you prefer a more subdued watch presence on the wrist, the traditional black rubber strap is an alternative. Given that the heavy-duty, orange canvas strap is meant to be worn over a flight suit, some may not appreciate its length, making the rubber strap the go-to option for smaller wrists.
A comparison with its predecessor, the BR 03-94 Black and White, shows a more comprehensive carbon black colouring without a bare steel inner-bezel or silver 30-second sub-dial. Also, the small seconds sub-dial is smooth. From the BR 03-94 Black and White, Bell & Ross has elevated the colour orange with the BR 03-94 Carbon Orange to offer a forward alternative.
