Interesting deal for Omega Speedmaster collectors – the Moonfire book
Moonfire is not a book about watches. However since it’s about the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing, i think most Omega Speedmaster collectors will find it an interesting book. Especially now the price dropped drastically.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing, Taschen Publishers and Norman Mailer joined forces to create a unique tribute to the defining scientific mission of our time. In 1969 Norman Mailer wrote about the Apollo mission for Life magazine. Moonfire is loaded with beautiful photos from the archives of NASA, Life magazine and many other resources.
So why am i writing about this book? I think it’s an interesting book for fans of the Omega Speedmaster. However when the book was published, last year, it was limited to 1969 copies and the price was simply outrageous. The first 1957 numbered copies came in a white resin box with a convex plexiglas window accompanied by a framed photo that was signed by Buzz Aldrin, one of the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission. The price…. was € 750,- .
Yes that was the price for the first 1957 copies, but what about the other 12 remaining copies? These 12 copies where called Lunar Rock Edition. It included a piece of lunar rock (hence the name) and a case designed by Marc Newson (who also designed the Jaeger LeCoultre Atmos 561 and the entire Ikepod collection). The price of these 12 copies varied, due to the size of the moon rock, from € 60,000 up to € 480,000. And before you wonder, this is no typo!
Now the limited editions have sold out, the book is available again. And finally for a decent price! Apparently has something to celebrate, because the 30th anniversary edition can be bought for € 29.99… yes, less than 30 (thirty) euro!
An extensive preview can be seen at the Taschen website, where the book Moonfire can also be ordered.

It was actually Omega that got me interested in watches. I assume you have already come across “The Alaska Project” special edition speedmaster?
