The A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin Blue Gold Flux, Now in Pink Gold
A new colour combination for ALS' elegant sparkling watch.
In the past 27 years, A. Lange & Söhne have often been rather cold and understated, with a typical Germanic style, which was largely compensated by the demonstrativeness of the movements. Yet, in recent years, the brand has added some flair and a slight dosage of extravagance in some of its collections, creating visually more embellished watches. Case in point, the “Gold Flux” treatment, a concept first applied to the Saxonia Thin model in 2018, resulting in a watch that evokes a star-studded nocturnal sky. Elegant yet stylish, this copper-glittered face is coming this year with a new combination of colours, in the new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin Blue Gold Flux Dial and Pink Gold case.
The Gold Flux dial first appeared in Lange’s collection back in 2018, back then housed in the 39mm case of the Saxonia thin. First unveiled in a combination of blue dial with a white gold case, it has been followed in 2020 by a second model. Besides the new combination of colour, with a white gold case and a black dial, the case was also slightly upgraded, as measuring now 40mm. This is the base used for this new, 2021 limited edition of the shimmering watch by ALS.
New for this edition is the combination of the blue dial with an 18k pink gold case. This watch is mostly distinguished from the rest of the Saxonia collection thanks to its dial, as case and mechanics are all well known. This means a “less is more” approach to design, with an ultra-thin shape and extremely sleek elements all around. The new 18k pink gold case retains the measurements of the 2020 black version, being 40mm in diameter and only 6.2mm in height – and thus perfectly qualified as an ultra-thin tuxedo watch. The case also retains the classic combination of polished bezel and lugs, and brushed casebands.
The real novelty here is that this warm-coloured case is mixed with the dark blue copper-glittered dial of the first “Gold Flux” watch of 2018. Reminiscent of so-called aventurine glass dials that can be found in many watches these days, A. Lange & Söhne does things its own way. The base for the dial is solid-silver and is then with a thin layer of blue gold flux. Thousands of tiny copper oxide crystals are embedded in the material, revealing copper-coloured speckles that shines depending on the ambient light. Combines with the dark blue background, this creates the effect of a starry sky. The process of producing gold flux has its roots in 17th-century Venice.
The display of this new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin Blue Gold Flux remains the same as a classic version of the Saxonia Thin, with only two hands rotating around the dial, displaying the hours and minutes. The starry blue surface is lightly adorned, with simple faceted gold applied markers and gold hands. This blue, glass-like dial is paired with a glossy, seamless alligator leather strap in dark blue and closed by a prong buckle.
Under the sapphire caseback, there’s the Lange manufacture calibre L093.1, an ultra-thin hand-wound movement of only 2.9mm in height. Despite its compact dimensions, this 2-hand engine can store up to 72 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Typical of the German School of watchmaking, it is built around a large 3/4 plate in untreated German silver, decorated with thin ribbings and gold chatons held in place by blued screws. The movement beats at 3Hz, it is fully decorated by hand like all ALS calibres, and it is precision-adjusted in five positions.
