In 1938, Alpina’s founder, Gottlieb Hauser, laid down his vision of the four essential characteristics of the sports watch: anti-magnetism, shock-resistance, water-resistance and stainless steel cases. Inspired by this vision, the Alpina Alpiner 4 is a collection of rugged yet versatile watches with a focus on functional practicality. The brand is launching four new references featuring handsome textured dials, including the cool green dial we have today on the wrist.

The new Alpiner 4 Automatic dials display a sunray finish paired with horizontal, recessed lines. Contrasting with the dial’s surface, the lines create a dynamic visual texture and a sense of depth. On the periphery, a sloping flange displays the minute track. Large, applied luminescent hour markers are treated with luminescent material for optimal legibility in all conditions. These are matched with luminescent hour and minute hands, while the second hand has a red counterweight in the shape of an Alpine peak. Two colours are available: stone grey and the one you can see in this hands-on, the forest green version.

Like previous versions, this utilitarian yet versatile design comes in a steel case that exudes a robust feel. At 44mm in diameter, it is admittedly a large watch. The bidirectional rotating bezel (with a 60-minute scale) is made of stainless steel and is fitted with a luminescent pearl to spot the zero position. The coined edge ensures a good grip. In keeping with the collection’s ethos, the case architecture incorporates a Faraday cage to shield the movement from the adverse influence of magnetic fields (tested to resist magnetic fields of up to 4,800 Ampere/metre). The crown and the engraved caseback are screw-in, and the water-resistance is rated 10 ATM / 100m.

The Alpina Alpiner 4 Automatic is driven by the calibre Alpina AL-25. Based on the ubiquitous Sellita SW 200-1, it is known as a reliable movement that has stood the test of time. Running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, this self-winding movement delivers 38 hours of autonomy when fully wound. It displays the hours, minutes, seconds and date at 3 o’clock.

There are four new references in total as these new Alpina Alpiner 4 automatics come either on a calfskin strap with off-white stitching or on a 3-link steel bracelet secured by a safety folding clasp. Price is set at EUR 1,250 on a leather strap and EUR 1,350 on a steel bracelet.

  1. I see oyster bracelet from Rolex, coin-edge bezel from Tutima (or Oris), dial from Omega and indices from Tag Heuer. Did I forgot anything? Oh yes, 44 mm for “robust feel” similar to Panerai. Could be a nice beater though.
