Retro-futuristic watches with new groovy colors, ready for summer.
The 1970s remain a constant source of inspiration for many industries. It was, after all, the age of free spirits and iconic designs, which found its way into watches as well. Funky colours and shaped cases were all the rage. In 2014, Glashütte Original introduced its take on the luxury sports watch with quite an original look and feel, the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date. Heck, it was even named after the decade it took inspiration from! And now, Glashütte Original introduces a pair of limited editions that play with the groovy theme, with two new funky colours: the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date 2021 Limited Editions sunny yellow and bright turquoise.
Now technically, there’s nothing new about these watches; the updates concern the dials only. But, as we’ve seen in the past, Glashütte Original is no stranger to original colours and textures. And for this pair of watches, the brand is not holding back. In 2019 Glashütte Original launched the first pair of Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date L.E’s, with dials reflecting the Saxon mountains. Two years onwards and we get new colours.
You have a choice of two very groovy 1970s colours: solid varnished yellow or degradé (gradient) varnished turquoise. Not the most common colours in the watchmaking industry, but they sure look striking! The yellow is a solid colour while the turquoise dial has a gradient effect, meaning the colour shifts from bright turquoise in the middle to slightly darker towards the edges. Other than the colour, nothing has changed on the dial. You still get the bi-compax chronograph layout with integrated power reserve indication in the running seconds sub-dial, and you still get that Panorama Date window that gives its name to the watch. Applied polished markers with luminous dots in the minute track and a set of dauphine shaped hands contrast nicely against the funky background.
The watches have a reasonable 40mm by 40mm square case with rounded edges for a softer look. The bezel is polished, set against the brushed surfaces of the case, with again a polished section that integrates into the strap or bracelet. The Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date comes on either a brown-grey nubuck leather strap, integrated into the case, or a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp that allows micro-adjustments.
On the technical side of things, these new 2021 limited editions are still powered by the in-house, integrated automatic flyback chronograph calibre 37-02. In typical Glashütte Original fashion, this is a very nicely finished movement with a stylized GO-shaped rotor visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. As an integrated chronograph movement, the crown and pushers are on the same level, which nicely balances the look of the case. It packs 70 hours of power reserve and displays hours, minutes, small seconds, the Panorama date, a power reserve and, of course, chronograph indications. The 30-minute counter is positioned at 3 o’clock and the 12-hour counter is visible in the aperture at 12 o’clock.
Both colours, sunny yellow and bright turquoise, are limited to 100 pieces and cost EUR 13,200 on the leather strap (a long and a short one are available) or EUR 14,400 on the integrated steel bracelet.
