Two New, Complex and Bold Models From Louis Moinet
Satellite tourbillon and 20-second retrograde indication, for the brand’s latest models.
A brand apart, Louis Moinet is never shy of exploring new design territories, different shapes and colours, as well as creating intricate mechanisms for unique displays. In this frame, Louis Moinet presents a unique piece titanium Tourbillon paying tribute to the ‘Hope Probe’ Emirates Mars Mission and new versions of its original Tempograph Chrome. And we got to spend some time with both models.
Louis Moinet Hope Probe Tourbillon Unique Piece
Louis Moinet has been releasing several ‘cosmic’ themed watches. The Hope Probe Tourbillon is a unique piece paying tribute to the Emirates Mars Mission launched to create the first complete portrait of the red planet’s atmosphere. Presented in a 47.4mm titanium case, the watch stages the brand’s planetary tourbillon (as seen with the Space Mystery for instance) whose large cage (13.59mm in diameter) is poised by a planet in rotation around it. As you would expect, for the occasion, the celestial body represented is Mars. The miniature representation of the planet is incrusted with Mars meteorite dust. The cage is hovering a hand-painted depiction of the Hope Probe on a black aventurine plate inlaid with a lunar meteorite fragment. The blue mother dial features an off-centre hour and minute indication at 6 o’clock and is hand-painted with the map of the Northern hemisphere constellations.
Turning the watch over, the exhibition case back offers an unimpeded view of the hand-wound LM48 calibre with a black rear plate featuring a hand-painted UAE astronaut. The watch is presented on an alligator leather strap with blue stitching and is secured with a folding buckle. It retails for CHF 220,000.
Quick Facts: 47.4mm grade 5 titanium case – water-resistant to 30m – hand-wound calibre LM48 – 21.600vph – 72-hour power reserve – alligator leather strap – Louis Moinet folding buckle – LM-68.20.HP – unique piece – CHF 220,000
Louis Moinet Tempograph Chrome Limited Edition
Part of the Louis Moinet collections since 2014, the 20-second Tempograph features a playful and captivating second display paired with an off-centre hour and minute indication at 4 o’clock. The visible retrograde second mechanism is triggered by a ratchet gear sliding on a three-armed retrograde snail cam thanks to a ruby to minimise friction.
The independent watchmaking brand now unveils two 12-piece limited editions of the Tempograph Chrome featuring respectively a green and black lacquered / guilloché décor. Presented in a 44mm steel case with the brand’s signature six-screw bezel, the two watches are powered by the LM50 calibre. Visible via the exhibition case back, this self-winding movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with 48 hours of power reserve when fully wound. The watch comes on an alligator leather strap and is secured to the wrist by a Louis Moinet Fleur de Lys folding buckle. The price is set at CHF 23,000.
Quick Facts: 44mm titanium case – water-resistant to 50m – automatic LM50 calibre – 28,800vph – 48-hour power reserve – alligator leather strap – Louis Moinet folding buckle – 2 limited editions of 12 watches each – CHF 23,000

As unique and one of a kind these pieces may be, I can’t get behind the bizarre dial. In my opinion, a timepiece should have some sense of classic style to it. To each their own.
