The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date
The Aikon infused with the Masterpiece collection spirit and in-house mechanics.
The Aikon collection has been a game changer for Maurice Lacroix. This successful line is the brand’s take on the popular luxury sports watch with an integrated bracelet. Thanks to its relatively reasonable price, it stands out in this category and complies with the brand’s motto: accessible luxury and high perceived quality. As Watches & Wonders 2021 kicks off, Maurice Lacroix presents a new model fitted with an in-house movement and infused with the spirit of its Masterpiece collection. Meet the new Aikon Master Grand Date, the new flagship model in the collection.
The first thing to catch your eye with the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date is its original display. Although the case and the overall design are unmistakably that of the Aikon collection, its dial is immediately reminiscent of the brand’s Masterpiece collection with off-centred indications and visible movement parts – including the balance wheel and escapement, just like the Masterpiece Gravity. Unlike most Aikon watches that are fitted with outsourced automatic movements, the Aikon Master Grand Date is powered by the new in-house calibre ML331, with off-centred hours, minutes and small seconds indication, and a large date with a double window at 10 o’clock.
An opening in the dial at 8 o’clock shows the watch’s beating heart comprised by the balance wheel held under a skeletonised arched bridge and the silicon escapement. The blue dial features embossed and grained surfaces, and all indications are delimited by metallic appliques for enhanced contrast and legibility. Beating at 18,000 vibrations/hours, the automatic Calibre ML331 can store 50 hours of power reserve.
The Aikon Master Grand Date comes in a large 45mm stainless steel case. In line with the rest of the Aikon collection, it shows an angular design and a bezel with six distinctive claws. Turning the watch over, the exhibition caseback reveals the movement with its openworked, brushed and snailed rotor. Its water-resistance is rated at 100 metres.
The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Master Grand Date comes on a five-row stainless steel bracelet and a dark blue Cordura textile strap secured with a steel folding clasp. The Cordura strap is emblazoned with the brand’s M logo. As with all Aikon watches, the straps and bracelets can be exchanged in seconds, with no tool required. The price is set at CHF 8,900.

I think…I quite like it. Not the proportions of the case, but for a deconstructed dial design it’s not bad. Although it might be because it’s reminding me of a Journe Octa Lune, but with a displayed balance instead of a moonphase.
I like it but far to overpriced…
