Oris Clipperton Limited Edition

For a few years now, Oris has been utilising its dive-watch production to highlight the protection of oceanic ecosystems that under threat, by sponsoring expeditions and fundraisers. Of course, it does make a lot of sense, as if there are no more diving areas to explore, what is the point of manufacturing dive watches? The latest example of such partnerships is linked to the Clipperton Island, the world’s most isolated landmass, which Oris wants to protect. Following this up is the launch of a new charity edition, based on the famed Aquis. Meet the Oris Clipperton Limited Edition.

Oris Clipperton Limited Edition

The Clipperton Island is an uninhabited atoll in the Eastern Tropical Zone with a unique ecosystem, which is under threat because of illegal commercial fishing and pollution.

The Clipperton Island is the world’s most isolated landmass. The uninhabited atoll sits in a zone known as the ETP, or the Eastern Tropical Zone, approximately 1,100km south of the tip of the Baja Peninsula, on the west coast of Mexico. The nearest landmass is 945km away. in fact, more people have scaled Mount Everest than have stepped foot on Clipperton Island – just to tell you how inaccessible this island is. Despite being totally isolated, the French-owned island and its unique ecosystem are under threat because of illegal commercial fishing and pollution. Its waters are a critical migration corridor for a number of threatened species of shark, pelagic and endemic species. Last year, a French ministerial order created a 12-nautical-mile Marine Protected Area (MPA) around the atoll and “The Clipperton Expedition”, a ‘citizen-science’ expedition led by N2Pix, specialized in underwater imagery and expeditions owned by Canadians Michel Labrecque and Julie Ouimet, was created. Oris is now an official sponsor of this expedition.

Following this announcement, Oris has unveiled a dedicated watch, the Oris Clipperton Limited Edition, and the 2,000 pieces will actually help protection of this atoll, as a percentage of funds raised by sales will go towards the protection of our ocean in upcoming initiatives. The watch in question is well-known, as based on the robust and efficient dive watch of the brand, the Aquis Date. For the occasion of this LE, the brand adds a few distinctive features though.

Oris Clipperton Limited Edition

While the 43.5mm steel case and its black polished ceramic bezel are much the same as the standard version of the Aquis, the Oris Clipperton Limited Edition features a dial coloured in gradient ocean blue – a colour slightly different from the normal blue you can find in the collection. Lighter, slightly more “turquoise”, it mimics the colour of the ocean surrounding the Clipperton Island. Also, the dial is showing a nice sun-ray pattern, which will offer nice reflections. Hands and indexes are the same as the recently-redesigned Aquis, with bolder and more angular shape.

Oris Clipperton Limited Edition

The same goes for the case and bracelet of this Oris Clipperton Limited Edition, identical to the newer Aquis, meaning a slightly slimmer and more finely finished case, yet still showing robust shapes, strong protections and a 300m water resistance. This charity edition will be available on both a steel bracelet and a black rubber strap. Inside the case is a reliable automatic movement, the Calibre 733, based on the Sellita SW200. The caseback here is no longer transparent but instead shows a dedicated engraving.

The Oris Clipperton Limited Edition will be produced in 2,000 pieces, all individually numbered. A percentage of funds raised will go towards the protection of the ocean, through different initiatives. Price is CHF 1,950 on rubber and CHF 2,150 on steel bracelet. More details on www.oris.ch.

  1. Hi Brice,
    thanks for sharing.

Another LE from Oris, so basically no news except for aesthetic variations…. However the quality/price ratio is still the same: almost unbeatable. From this standpoint I think Oris is probably the best choice out there.
