For many years now, Oris has had a focus on preserving not only their heritage as a manufacturer of proper tool watches but also to aid in sustaining our precious planet. Mostly linked to aquatic life, Oris has dedicated itself to protect ocean wildlife, reduce plastic pollution, preserve some of the world’s most unique eco-systems and more. Their latest limited edition seeks attention to protect the world’s single largest tidal system in the world; the Wadden Sea. This is the Oris Dat Watt Limited Edition.
Using their Aquis collection as a platform for multiple special and limited editions to create awareness, the Dat Watt Limited Edition is another striking looking watch tying together what Oris is known for best. Combining their bold and masculine looking Aquis models with various interesting dial configurations, sometimes with added complications whilst remaining proper tool watches. And being Oris, most often at an attainable price too. Previous Aquis models linked to a good cause included the ‘Source of Life’ limited edition, ‘Oceans Project’ trilogy and the recently introduced GMT Date Whale Shark L.E.
Shifting its attention to yet another oceanic region, Oris presents the Dat Watt Limited Edition, dedicated to the Wadden Sea. Unknown to most, it is the largest unbroken tidal flat system in the world. It covers an 11,500km2 area and over 500km of coastline to the north of the Netherlands, Germany and the western part of Denmark. The transition from salt marshes to marine and brackish areas is unlike anywhere on earth. Each year over 10 million birds use this area as resting and feeding grounds in their annual migration. It is host to more than 5,000 species of plants, fish, birds and other forms of life.
Oris has collaborated with the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS) to raise awareness on this remarkable ecosystem with the Dat Watt Limited Edition. Based on the Aquis, the Dat Watt gets its name from a local German dialect for the Wadden Sea. The dial gradually ranges from a greyish beachy area at the bottom, stretching out to sea only to gradually transition to the sky as it gets darker near the top. The dial plays host to an unusual indication, displaying lunar cycle and tidal range for earth’s Northern hemisphere. A white hand linked to the correct day of the 29,5-day lunar cycle indicates the corresponding tidal range and waxing and waning of the moon.
The Oris Dat Watt Limited Edition comes in a 43,5mm stainless steel case with a circular brushed grey ceramic insert on its rotating bezel. It has the Oris 761 calibre with pointer moon indication, based on the Sellita SW200-1. This automatic movement has centrally mounted hours, minutes and seconds hands and of course the hand for the tidal and lunar indication. All markings are done in white, with large applied hour markers filled with Super-LumiNova. A date window at the bottom completes the dial.
The Oris Dat Watt Limited Edition comes in a run of 2,009 pieces, marking the year the Wadden Sea has been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Only available on a steel bracelet, it is priced at CHF 2,450. Parts of the proceeds will fund a program to further protect the Wadden Sea.
