Sarpaneva Korona Kosmos

One of our all-time favorites, here on Monochrome Watches, is Finish watchmaker / designer, mister Stepan Sarpaneva. His iconic moon face (yes, that’s no typo) is almost bigger than the brand itself and features on Sarpaneva’s newest creation. After the K3 Northern Stars and the collaboration with Max Busser, which resulted in the Moon Machine, we can now introduce to you the Korona Kosmos.

Sarpaneva Korona Kosmos

The dial comprises no less than 12 layers of various parts, including the moon phase disk and the moon face itself. The disk that overlaps the moon, in order to show the correct phase of the moon, features 125 miniature stars, which have been cut by a laser to get nice and crisp stars. The disk makes one full rotation in 59 days, so one moon phase, from new moon to waxing moon, to full moon, to waning moon and back to new moon again, takes 29,5 days on the Korona Kosmos (to be precise, it actually takes 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.9 seconds).

The Korona Kosmos is available in stainless steel with electric blue dial, however Sarpaneva also offers the watch more variations. How about black DLC coated with a red gold moon, like on this K3 Northern Stars? Or maybe you fancy another combination like this K3 Northern Stars with a grey anthracite dial and a red gold moon. Here are some more variations of the K3 Northern Stars that might inspire you.

Personally I’ve fallen madly in love with another combination, of which I unfortunately do not have any photo: a red gold case with the electric blue dial and a red gold moon face. The stainless steel version comes for € 14,500 Euro before tax and other versions are upon request.

The case and movement

The case is 42 mm in diameter and 11.1 mm in height, including the slightly domed sapphire crystal. The crystal has anti-reflective coating only on the inside, so that potential scratches in the coating will never occur!

Inside ticks a Soprod A-10 movement that is heavily modified. Of course by adding gearing for the moon phase indication, but also the main plate and other parts have been modified and will be coated in a color of choice.

The idea for this way of showing the moon phase, comes from the English watchmaker Thomas Mudge.  Some 10 years ago Sarpaneva read an article about it and kept it as an idea for later. Three years ago he already created the first variation of this moon phase indication, which can be seen in one of his print magazines, and now the watch finally got a name (Korona Kosmos) and is officially launched.

Who was Thomas Mudge?

Thomas Mudge, who lived from 1715 until 1794, was an English horologist and he invented the lever escapement. This can easily be called the greatest single improvement ever applied to watches, and in it is still used in pretty much every mechanical watch to this day. Mudge also devised mechanisms for the equation of time, perpetual calendar, minute-repeater, and other complications.
