The Zenith Chronomaster Sport in Rose Gold

In early 2021, Zenith introduced a new vision of its legendary El Primero chronograph that made a lot of noise, being extremely well received by both the press and watch enthusiasts – us included. This new Chronomaster Sport is a fresh and sharper new look for a collection that has spawned numerous versions and generations since it was originally presented at the 1994 Basel watch fair. More modern, sportier, it shows a new design outside and a significant boost inside, with enhanced mechanics. Following the inaugural steel editions, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport now comes in a rose gold version.

The Zenith Chronomaster Sport is probably the brand’s most discussed watch in several years but in a very positive way. It maintains the overall look and signature elements of the most recent iterations of the model in a sportier, more functional variant. Still sharp and angular, with its distinctive lugs that were first found on the 1969 A386 watch, it also brings a new intermediate and contemporary diameter of 41mm. Compared to previous iterations of the Chronomaster, the main difference is the bezel – an element that drastically changes the overall look of the watch, making it far more modern. It indeed comes with a  black ceramic bezel featuring the 1/10th of a second graduation, a unique bezel typology for chronographs, differing from the more common tachymeter scales. More technical, more contrasted and slightly sportier, it made the Chronomaster enter a new category of watches.

There are things however that must not change, and that is typically the case of the tri-colour dial, one of the most emblematic elements of El Primero watches. Based on this signature design cue, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport brought back the silver, grey and blue overlapping sub-dials, as well as the sharp, faceted applied hour markers, which were all first seen on the 1969 watches.

What’s new today is the addition of a new reference to the collection. Next to the matte white and matte black stainless steel models, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport will now be available in a warmer, more luxurious 18k rose gold edition. Not only the case is made of gold, but so are the crown and pushers, and the engravings on the bezel, the applied markers and the hands are all equally gold-coloured. For now, this gold case is only available in combination with the matte white dial, and worn on a black calfskin strap closed by a rose gold triple folding clasp, for a slightly more elegant look.

Inside the case, there’s still the El Primero calibre 3600, the latest and most technical evolution of the legendary automatic chronograph. Still running at a high frequency of 5Hz, it now displays the 1/10th of a second in a perfectly clear way, since the central chronograph hand makes one turn in 10 seconds – that’s six times the speed of a normal chronograph hand. This frenetic measurement can be read thanks to the scale on the bezel. Also, the power reserve has been beefed up to 60 hours (versus 50h before), thanks to an optimised kinetic chain, and this movement now features a stop-seconds mechanism. The overall look and decoration are also more modern and more technical than they used to be in the past. The movement displays central hours and minutes, a small seconds at 9 o’clock, the central 1/10th of a second, a 60-second counter and a 60-minute counter, respectively at 3 and 6 o’clock. A date is positioned at 4:30.

The Zenith Chronomaster Sport Rose Gold is launched as part of the permanent collection and will be priced at CHF 19,900. It is now available from Zenith boutiques and retailers around the world.
