Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tribute – Yellow Gold and Ivory Enamel
A yellow gold case, an ivory enamel dial and classic styling for Jaquet Droz' 280th anniversary.
We already knew that Baselworld 2018 was about celebration. Jaquet Droz celebrates its grand 280th anniversary this year, which got kick-started with a tribute watch, the Grande Seconde Moon Black Enamel. And while the brand looks to the future with an impressively modern Skeleton Grande Seconde watch, it is also doing what it is famous for: elegant, restrained watches, such as this new limited edition, yellow gold case and ivory enamel dial of the Jaquet Droz Grande Second Tribute.
Don’t expect something utterly new here. The Grande Second Tribute is entirely faithful to the iconic model that was created in 2002, with its signature figure 8 on the dial – an ode to old pocket watches manufactured by Pierre Jaquet Droz and sold mainly to China. The ingredients in the recipe are familiar and always pleasant: a curved and smooth case with a large dial opening, a combination of a large small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock and a small hour and minute dial at 12 o’clock, a relatively large diameter yet great proportions, and an elegant feel on the wrist.
What’s new about this Grande Second Tribute limited edition? It pays tribute to Pierre Jaquet Droz’ early creations with a combination of a yellow case marking the first time that the brand offers a wristwatch in yellow gold. With a diameter of 43mm, the watch comes with an antique-inspired ivory enamel dial. No modernity here, only traditions and heritage. The dial is, as always, very well executed and pleasantly original, with the unique layout that makes this watch easily recognisable. The number of the watch, or “numerus clausus” as JD likes to name it, is printed on the dial, with the serial number in red – a subtle splash of colour that animates the dial. This Jaquet Droz Grande Second Tribute will be produced in 88 pieces, all individually numbered.
While the movement uses the same base as various other watches of the brand – most of the Grande Seconde watches share the same in-house architecture – this Grande Second Tribute features a specific decoration, with a guilloché rotor manufactured in yellow gold, to match the case. The rest of the self-winding calibre 2663 is tried-and-tested, with a double barrel construction – providing 68h of energy – and a silicon escapement (balance spring and pallet lugs), making it resistant to variations in magnetic fields and temperatures.
This new Jaquet Droz Grande Second Tribute is a discreet yet elegant update of the classic Grande Second collection. It will be priced at CHF 22,050 and produced in 88 pieces. More details on www.jaquet-droz.com.
