A new Divido watch showcasing traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Following the success of its blue hand-lacquered and embossed copper dial of the Divido series, Minase unveils a new version of its model with a round case showcasing traditional Japanese crafts with a deep blue shimmering Urushi lacquer dial.
One of Minase’s flagship models, the Divido is a 40.5mm three-hander with a very elaborate case construction. Its complex 8-piece stainless steel case uses the four lugs (screwed from the back of the watch) to hold all the parts together. Following the brand’s distinctive case-in-case architecture, the dial literally seems to be floating under the sapphire crystal. The movement is actually housed inside a container, sandwiched between an “index ring” and the casing ring.
Instead of a lacquered hammered copper dial, the new model features a deep blue Urushi silver Maki-e dial. Urushi lacquer is derived from the sap of the Urushi tree that is native to Japan, Korea and China. A traditional technique practised for centuries in Japan, Urushi lacquer creates deep and pure colours. Another distinctive Japanese lacquerware technique, Maki-e consists of sprinkling powder on the lacquer surface before it dries. In this instance, silver dust is used. Another layer of translucent lacquer is then applied as protection. The process is repeated twice to create a greater sense of depth to the mysterious, shimmering blue lacquer.
The Divido is powered by the KT7001/1 automatic calibre. It is based on the reliable ETA 2824 and customised with hand-polishing and perlage on the plate and bridges. The rotor is treated in black with a Minase logo pattern. The movement displays the hours, minutes, seconds and the date at 3 o’clock. Its power reserve is of 38 hours when fully wound.
The Minase Divido Deep Blue Urushi Silver Maki-e dial comes either on a rubber strap or on an elaborate steel bracelet closed by a folding clasp. Price is set at CHF 5,350 on rubber strap and CHF 6,470 on bracelet (price excl. taxes).

Do Seiko not offer their higher-end movements, even to Japanese independents?
Strange to see a Japan Made watch with an ETA movement, but if their only domestic choices were cheaper Seiko Instruments of Miyota movements, I guess it’s understandable.
My only experience with Urushi lacquer was when I tried out some audiophile-grade Fostex headphones that had a red finish on the earcups. They were stunning.
