Nomos Tangente 38 “50 years of Doctors Without Borders”
Médecins Sans Frontières turns 50, and Nomos continues to support the organisation during these difficult times.
Nomos has been actively supporting Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders since 2012. To date, over 10,000 watches have been produced to raise funds for MSF, all distinguished by the red numeral 12. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Doctors Without Borders, and Nomos will support the international humanitarian medical organisation with 2,021 pieces of its Tangente 38 watch. For the first time, the Nomos watches for MSF will be available for sale worldwide. The sale of each Tangente 38 will generate EUR 100 for MSF. If all 2,021 pieces are sold, this would mean a total contribution of EUR 210,000 to the medical organisation.
Médecins Sans Frontières
Founded in Paris in 1971, Médecins Sans Frontières was started by a small team of doctors and journalists. Today, it is a global organisation that leads and funds emergency aid projects around the world. This Nobel Prize-winning organisation provides emergency aid to around 70 countries responding to natural disasters, disease, forced migration and malnutrition. Given the current pandemic, support for the MSF is more urgent than ever. As Christian Katzer, general director of the German section of MSF, comments: “This year’s pandemic has made our operations, logistics and travels more difficult and more expensive. The funds we receive from the sales of these watches are needed now more urgently than ever.”
Tangente 38 MSF
The watch selected for this mission is the Tangente 38, the classic round watch with angular lugs and the Bauhaus design ethos endorsed by Nomos. For the first time in its history, the Tangente is paired with a dark grey textile strap and bears an inscription at 6 o’clock that reads ‘50 ANS DE MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES’. Like all watches produced by Nomos to support MSF, the Arabic numeral 12 is red.
The polished steel case has a diameter of 37.5mm and a slim height of just 6.7mm. A thin bezel frames the galvanised white silver-plate dial displaying the Bauhaus-era typography with slender Arabic numerals interspersed with long, thin markers. The caseback is sealed with a limited edition engraving and reference to the 50 years of MSF and the date 1/2021.
Below the caseback is Nomos’ in-house manual-winding Alpha calibre. An ultra-thin movement with a height of just 2.6mm, the Alpha calibre is adjusted to chronometer standards and offers a power reserve of 43 hours. Used across the board, the Alpha calibre was Nomos’ first in-house movement. Although the movement is hidden, it is finished with traditional Glashütte ribbing and Nomos perlage.
Availability & Price
As mentioned, the Tangente 38 – 50 Ans de Médecins Sans Frontières comes with a grey woven textile strap with a stainless steel pin buckle. The retail price is EUR 1,620, the same price as other Tangente 38 models. As Nomos explains: “100 euros from the sale of each watch – half donate by Nomos Glashütte, half by the retailer – goes, in full, directly towards providing emergency aid.” The watch will be available at retailers by the end of April 2021.
