Yes, the Italians did it again… Breaking one record after another, Bvlgari’s signature ultra-thin collection, the Octo Finissimo, continues its victorious onward march. Almost every year, the Roman brand comes out with something even more staggering, even thinner and still, highly contemporary in design. Bvlgari has not only managed to become a Master of the ultra-thin complication but it has literally revamped and refreshed a category that was usually quite conservative. And because the Octo Finissimo Automatic Tourbillon was introduced earlier this year as the thinnest automatic watch and the thinnest tourbillon watch, it is high time to understand how the brand became a master of wafer-thin movements.
The thinnest tourbillon in 2014, the thinnest minute repeater in 2016, the thinnest automatic watch (for a few months) in 2017… We thought Bvlgari would have stopped here. But it didn’t. At Baselworld 2018, the Roman brand smashed all records with its new, impressive, modern Octo Finissimo Automatic Tourbillon, the world’s thinnest automatic watch and tourbillon watch ever created – with a paper-thin 3.95mm case.
Creating watches of these characteristics doesn’t come out of the blue. Years and years of experience, of research and development and both financial and personal investments, were necessary. But the result goes beyond all expectations. When it comes to the ultra-thin watch, one other manufacture had, until a few years ago, complete hegemony. It now has an ultra-competitive Swiss-Italian rival. What makes Bvlgari unique in this path for slenderness isn’t only on the technical side, but also in the fresh, contemporary and Roman-inspired design of the Octo Finissimo collection. Forget about the conservative, austere thin dress watch. The Octo is young, bold – and thin, very thin too.

Informative and very interesting video production. I have to say, the white is very interesting, while the carbon may take some getting used too. It would appear that these octo’s simply have to be tried on, have to be on the wrist to fully understand and appreciate. There is no denying however the amazing achievement of these ultra thin calibres. I wish a certain German brand would start thinking thin…..
