Since the 1995 film Goldeneye, Omega has been James Bond’s official watch. In this film, actor Pierce Brosnan wore an Omega Seamaster 300M Professional Quartz, featuring a blue dial with the signature wave pattern. This model and all its modern iterations would earn the nickname the “Bond Watch” (see our Retrospective of the Entire Omega Seamaster x James Bond 007 History here). Based on the recently revamped Seamaster Diver 300M, Omega introduces a limited edition for diehard fans of 007 and celebrates the 50th anniversary of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969).

Omega x Bond

Omega and James Bond have been partners since Goldeneye (1995), and ever since then, the world’s most famous spy has since been wearing a Seamaster watch (or more than one) in every single movie. Some will say that it’s only product placement but in fact, it goes further than that because the watches play a huge role in the films as Bond’s main accessory – remember the metal-cutting laser of Goldeneye, the detonator of Tomorrow Never Dies, the grappling hook of The World Is Not Enough and the countdown/bomb device of Spectre?

Not only are the watches featured in the films, but they are also available to the public (minus gadgets… sadly), such as the Seamaster Aqua Terra 150m Master Co-Axial LE for Spectre and the Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition. You can see all the watches worn and all the special editions launched by Omega in this article.

50 years of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”

While we’re not sure yet of the watch that will be worn by Bond in the upcoming No Time To Die movie – even though it might appear on some shooting images – today Omega is releasing a new watch to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Known as the sixth film in the series and the only one starring George Lazenby (who was wearing something different on the wrist), this movie also remains one of the most popular and one of the most unique in the series. Aston Marin also celebrated this 50th anniversary with a special edition DB11 as a tribute to the DBS driven by Lazenby.

Several 007-related themes have been used by Omega to create limited edition watches – the 007 logo as a dial pattern, the 007 logo as a counterweight for the seconds hand or as an hour index, the famous gun barrel for the case back… The theme for this new watch is the Bond family coat of arms, with the motto “Orbis – Non – Sufficit” which could be translated as “The world is not enough”.

This new Seamaster Diver 300M is based on the classic steel model introduced at Baselworld 2018, which featured a slightly enlarged case, a new ceramic dial with the return of the iconic wave pattern and a new Master Chronometer movement. Despite the evolutions, the watch remains immediately recognizable as the Bond Watch. The limited edition released by Omega today shares its case and movement with this standard model but also comes with multiple unique Bond-related features and surprises to please collectors and fans of the world’s most famous spy.

The case, made of brushed stainless steel, still measures 42mm in diameter, still retains the helium escape valve at 10 o’clock and the typical Seamaster shape with lyre lugs. The bezel, made of ceramic, remains unchanged with the white enamel diving scale. This limited edition is presented on a black rubber strap with a steel pin buckle. A stainless steel bracelet is also included in the special package.

So what’s unique about this Omega Seamaster Diver 300M On Her Majesty’s Secret Service 50th Anniversary? On the side of the case, OMEGA has placed an 18k yellow gold plate engraved with each unique Limited Edition number (7,007 pieces altogether).

18k yellow gold has also been used to create the hands and indexes, including the index at 12 o’clock, which is inspired by the Bond family coat of arms. On the seventh day of each month, the number 7 on the date window appears in the same font as the 007 logo. There is also a hidden “50” on the 10 o’clock index, which appears by night as a secret signature when it lights up with the Super-LumiNova.

The dial is also new to this edition. Presented in black, this Seamaster Diver 300M features a black PVD on black ceramic dial with a spiral-brushed gun barrel design and 9mm bullet head at the centre.

Under the see-through sapphire caseback is the Omega Master Chronometer Calibre 8800, beating at 25,200vph (3.5Hz) and with a 55h power reserve. It features all the classic Omega innovations, such as Co-Axial escapement and anti-magnetic properties (up to 15,000 gauss).

  1. Omega want to be seen as Rolex’ equal and objectively, there is nothing to differentiate them from a technical/quality standpoint.
Where Rolex have the advantage is Gravitas: Brilliant, long-established designs that go right back to the Halcyon Days of Western Dominance and Post-War confidence. A Sub from any of the last 60-odd years is immediately recognisable from across the room.

Oddly, Omega have learned nothing from either their greatest rival or their greatest watch. Instead, they fritter away their capital on puerile stunts like this, trying to grab kudos from a silly (and wrong) movie tie-in and garner sales from their thousandth limited edition Moonwatch.
Omega make great watches. Time to act like it. The Railmaster is a direct and superior competitor to The Explorer and it languishes in obscurity. Thee Speedmaster to have is The Original, which is top-right behind the 50 “Sedna Gold” models nobody wants.
    Grow up Omega!

  2. I agree with you there. Although for me, the biggest turn-off is that their automatic Chronographs are almost comically thick. All that high-tech and R&D at their disposal, and they think, “that’ll do.” Turns me right off them.

  3. Probably a good marketing ploy. A toy for grown ups who have just seen the new film and have 6000 to spare. I am sure that reading the Bond books as a boy is what got the name Rolex into my head (because Bond wore one )

  4. What you call a “wave pattern” is, I believe, the view from inside a Walter PPK rifled barrel, James Bond’s favourite handpiece.

  5. Agree with all the comments here so far. Omega completely dilute their brand and credibility with novelties like this. I thought they could do no worse than the Commander Bond a few years as and they have gone and done it. If see someone wearing a standard Seamaster, I think ‘Good choice’ but this and I would think ‘Grow up, you are not Bond’. If this sells I expect to see a model for every Bond movie they have not hijacked already.

  6. I understand (from a very well placed source) that Bond will be wearing an ORIS in the next outing.

  7. Brice,
I was only joking. I love my ORIS watches. I love Monochrome too. Keep up the excellent work.
    PJP

  8. Let’s hope Grand Seiko don’t get any ideas! I’d hate to see Bond wear a diver’s watch that weighs more than his PPK.;-)
