About 6 months ago, Omega announced the renewal of its role as the official timekeeper of the America’s Cup, with the 36th edition to be held in Auckland, New Zealand, from the 6th to the 21st of March 2021. Coincidentally, the brand also released a special edition watch, based on the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m. Today, as we’re getting closer from the start of the legendary race, the Biel-based brand release another special model, this time based on its robust diving chronograph, with multiple new features. Meet the new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup Chronograph.

The America’s Cup is renowned as the oldest trophy in international sport and since 1851 is considered to be the most prestigious sailing race in the world. The concept goes that a trophy awarded to the winner of the America’s Cup match races between two sailing yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club that currently holds the America’s Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. 2021 will see the 36th edition of the America’s Cup where Defender Emirates Team New Zealand will be racing against the winner of the Prada Cup, the Challenger Selection Series, with the winner being the first team to score seven points. This edition will also be the third time in history that Omega serves in the prestigious sailing race, ever since the brand began its partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand and legendary sailor Sir Peter Blake in 1995. Following the cool Planet Ocean 600m for the 36th America’s Cup, the brand now releases a typical regatta chronograph that also brings several improvements to the classic version of the Seamaster Diver 300M Chronograph.

The new Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup Chronograph

This watch is based on a model that was introduced back in 2019, the newest version of a classic model for Omega, the chronograph Seamaster Diver 300M. This watch marked a strong evolution over its predecessor, with the integration of new design elements but mostly a new Master Chronometer engine.

Big and bold, but also built to last, the brand is offering several updates, both visual and technical with a new edition dedicated to the 36th America’s Cup. The base remains the same, with a 44mm diameter case, measuring about 17mm in height – the combination of an automatic chronograph and diver’s credentials usually results in large models. The case retains the same shape, with twisted lugs and polished/brushed surfaces. Also, the blue ceramic bezel with white enamel scale is still present. The watch still features twin sapphire crystals, a screw-down crown, a helium escape valve and is water-resistant to 300m.

Evolutions are to be noted all over the watch, however. First, the pushers are now coloured in red and blue – two emblematic colours of the America’s Cup – and covered in rubber for better grip in wet conditions. The brand has also equipped its new watch with the so-called “CHRONO LOCK” device, a sliding button at 8 o’clock that secures the chronograph functions when needed, avoid accidental measurements.

The dial, which is still made of blue ceramic and laser engraved with the signature wave pattern, has been updated with classic red elements and purpose-built regatta functions. The sub-counter at 3 o’clock, which includes both minutes and hours, now features a regatta countdown indicator ring in red anodized aluminium. For legibility reasons, the hour hand has been removed and replaced by an internal hour disc. The two subsidiary hands, in red anodized aluminium for the chronograph minutes and rhodium-plated for the small seconds, are inspired by the shape of a boat hull. The central seconds chronograph hand, also in red anodized aluminium, carries an America’s Cup on the counterweight. The date at 6 o’clock has been retained.

Omega also uses this new Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup Chronograph to introduce a new concept, its patented Quick Change system. The watch is delivered with a stainless steel bracelet and a blue rubber strap and both feature a button on the back. A simple press releases the pins from the watch-head, enabling the wearer to switch easily between the bracelet and the strap without having to use tools.

Under a specifically-decorated case, with “36th America’s Cup” and “Auckland 2021” engravings, sits the Calibre 9900, an automatic chronograph with column wheel, vertical clutch, co-axial escapement, silicon hairspring and twin barrels (60h power reserve). It is classically decorated with Arabesque stripes and, as most Omega’s movements, it is Master Chronometer certified and resistant high magnetic fields.
