Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Limited Edition

If you are into watches, and most definitely into an icon of watchmaking named the Omega Speedmaster, the word #SpeedyTuesday might familiar. Created in 2012 by our colleagues of Fratello Watches, this must not be sued up to a single tag for social media but more as the rallying cry of all Speedmaster passionates (and, yes, we’re amongst them). To mark this great achievement – which definitely serves Omega as a whole – the brand is proud to introduced a 2,012 pieces limited edition with several unique features, inspired by a 1978 Vintage “Alaska Project” edition, the Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Limited Edition.

Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Limited Edition

We’re not going to go over all the specs of the Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Limited Edition simply because this edition is based on the more than famous Professional edition “Moonwatch”. It means a 42mm stainless steel case, the iconic 1861 movement (virtually the same movement that powered the timepieces NASA’s astronauts wore on the moon – with one or two differences, as they were flying with the 861) and the combination of a tri-compaxblack dial with external Tachymeter bezel. The Speedy is an icon that doesn’t need introduction anymore. So what is different with this Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday? In fact, many things. It’s not just about a change of dial color.

It is a Reverse Panda (and a luminous one…)

Great feature. While the “Panda” dial has always been the apanage of another model (you know, that other iconic chronograph…), I know many Speedmaster fans that would love to have a Panda Moonwatch. Guess they will be happy to know that  one of their dreams come true. Indeed, the Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday has its 3 sub-counters in white over the usual matt black background. Funky feature: the central and snailed part of these sub-dials is coated with SuperLuminova, os it shines at night. Not only cool, it will also provide a stronger night-time usability.

The rest of the dial is rather close to the Original Moonwatch used as a base… at first. Indeed, you can spot the metallic applied logo instead of the painted logo (and it’s the old-school elongated logo) as well as the vintage-style “Speedmaster” inscription. The hands share the same design, but are done in steel rather than painted in white, while the sub-dial hands (reverse panda obliges) are black. Markers, scales and bezel of the Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Limited Edition are the same as a standard Moonwatch.

It is a Radial Dial inspired by the 1978 “Speedmaster Alaska III”

Another great feature (some will say detail) is that this Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Limited Edition has a “radial dial”, inspired by a specific watch, the original 1978 “Speedmaster Alaska III” model. This watch was produced for NASA, who insisted on a watch that was anti-reflective and easy-to-read in space. Thus, not only it has specific radial inscriptions on the sub-counters (not written horizontally like in the Moonwatch but radially around the sub-dials), but its stainless steel case, like the Alaska III, is entirely brushed. No more polished line from lug to lug, no more polished crown and pushers. The Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday is entirely brushed, to the exception of the Omega logo on the crown.

It comes with a complete package

For a price of 5,300 Euro (VAT inc.) you’ll be able to have the watch (limited to 2,012 pieces) on a brown leather strap, delivered in a special leather watch roll containing a spare NATO strap with #SpeedyTuesday engraved on the strap’s loop, as well as a strap-changing tool.

You can choose the limited edition number you want

Well, that’s up to you, but you’ll be able to specify which of the 2,012 watches you’d like to buy. Quite cool. This number will be on the caseback, alongside the Speedmaster’s iconic Seahorse medallion, encircled by the words SPEEDY TUESDAY ANNIVERSARY – A TRIBUTE TO ALASKA PROJECT III. Circling the outer-edge of the caseback is the word RADIAL.

It will sold online (a first for Omega)

The Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Limited Edition also has its own place in OMEGA’s history as the brand’s first watch sold online. OMEGA has a strong web presence, but has never before used a social platform as a selling tool. The watch will be showcased on the @OMEGA Instagram channel and customers will be able to click through to a dedicated page at omegawatches.com where they can reserve the watch. The watches will be delivered in the summer of 2017.

  1. Hi Brice,
    thanks for sharing.
Frankly I don’t like this piece too much, the luminous “panda” counter lack a bit of taste in my personal opinion.

Generally speaking (so not only for Omega) I’m afraid we have a bit too many “limited editions” out there to be really limited and to be considered really “luxury”.

    Just my two cents,
    regards,

  2. It’s a beautiful watch but there’s a current inflation of “limited” series, notably with the Moonwatch, and their pricing, compared to the classic version, is somewhat eccentric (given the relatively minor modifications involved). As long as they sell, I guess… But being a big Omega fan, I hope the brand won’t suffer from this strategy.

  3. Hello

Yes I agree, that Omega seems to be submitting new limited editions quite often. That being said I only look for the next James Bond Edition. But we have to wait on Daniel to resume that role, perhaps next year. Those Panda counters do look a bit quirky for a watch of Omegas status. One would have been much classier.
