By now, most of us, if not all of us, are fully aware we are living on borrowed time. The Earth’s climate is rapidly deteriorating, provoking natural disasters and the extinction of many species. One of the biggest challenges we face is reducing the production of plastic and its disposal. According to studies, a truckload of plastic waste leaks into our oceans every minute. Once again, Oris seeks to raise awareness of this very alarming issue with the new Oris Aquis Date Upcycle, based on its signature modern dive watch

The Swiss watch brand is not the first nor the only brand aiming to better the world in one way or another. The main focus is to raise awareness through special partnerships and limited editions; often, part of the proceeds go to charitable organizations the brand partners with.

While you might argue the impact may be limited, the cause is noteworthy, and Oris is actually a certified climate-neutral company. Together with a new partner, #tide, Oris produces ‘Cleanup Bags’ from recycled plastic, that are used to collect plastic trash around the globe. Part of this trash is upcycled, hence the name of the watch, into the new Oris Aquis Date Upcycle.

The standout feature of this watch is, of course, the dial, which is made of recycled ocean plastics, much like the Ocean Trilogy set with a box of this material. Each one has a unique pattern and colour combination resulting from the recycling process. The dials are set in either a 41.50mm or 36.50mm steel Aquis case. Applied hour markers and large hands are coated with Super-LumiNova. The rest of the watch is pretty much what you’d expect from an Aquis. A rotatable bezel, here with a grey ceramic insert, a good level of water-resistance (300m), a screw-down crown and an automatic movement.

Visible through a sapphire caseback is the Oris 733 calibre, based on the automatic Sellita SW 200-1. This time-and-date movement is well-known and a good, reliable workhorse. It has central hour, minute and seconds hands, and a date window at the bottom of the dial. Both sizes are non-limited and come on a three-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp and diver’s extension. The watch comes in a presentation box made from sustainable and recycled paper. The price for the Oris Aquis Date Upcycle is CHF 2,100 and it will be available from September 2021.
