A special flight-ready watch for NATO’s pilot training school in Spain.
Oris has secured a partnership with NATO’s pilot training school based in Albacete, Spain. To mark the occasion, the brand has released a 750-piece version of its Big Crown ProPilot Day Date kitted out in a gunmetal grey case and a military green dial.
Oris has been associated with the world of aviation since the turn of the 20th century. Starting with pilot pocket watches in the early 1910s, Oris produced its first pilot’s wristwatch in 1917. With its reputation for reliable, robust tool watches, the brand has an entire collection dedicated to Aviation with vintage-style models like the Big Crown Pointer Date, a bold titanium skeletonised ProPilot X version and more contemporary styles like the Big Crown ProPilot Day Date.
Tactical Leadership Programme (TLP)
Given Oris’ background in pilot watches, its partnership with NATO’s Tactical Leadership Programme is a natural fit. The Tactical Leadership Programme, also known as the Pilot School of NATO, was founded in 1978 and has been headquartered at Los Llanos Air Base in the Spanish city of Albacete since 2009. Composed of military and civilian personnel from the ten NATO nations participating in the programme, the main objective is to increase the effectiveness of air forces in the field of tactical leadership with an emphasis on advanced combat pilot training.

Regular Big Crown ProPilot Day Date models are, as their name indicates, big on all fronts. The 44mm diameter and the oversized crowns are a nod to early pilot’s watches that needed to be legible and easy to manipulate while wearing gloves, and the day and date are also enlarged. The coin-edged bezel is another family trait inspired by the turbine of a jet engine. With its screw-down crown and sealed caseback, the watch is water-resistant to depths of 100 metres.
The TLP Limited Edition model underscores the combat pilot theme with its anti-glare gunmetal grey PVD case. The dial also references the green flight overalls of TLP pilots with its military green colour and grainy matte texture. The beige minutes track and inscriptions on the dial also use the same colour as the golden eagle featured on the TLP logo.
As a pilot’s watch, legibility is top-notch. The applied Arabic numerals and hour markers as well as the hour and minute hands are all treated with Super-LumINova that glows blue in the dark. Another unique feature of this watch is the red-tipped seconds hand.
The TLP is fitted with Oris calibre 752, based on a Sellita SW 220-1, beating at 28,800vph with a 38-hour power reserve.
Another military detail is the high-performance green textile Ventile® strap, similar to the straps invented during WWII for British RAF pilots. In addition to the 750 pieces available to the public, Oris is also offering graduating pilots from TLP a bespoke edition with their name and year of graduation. The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Day Date TLP Limited Edition comes in an olive and orange Ventile travel pouch and retails for CHF 2,200.
