Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition Bronze

2 years ago, Oris presented the first Carl Brashear Limited Edition, a bronze vintage-inspired dive watch with a lovely contrasting blue dial. No need to say, it was an instant hit. The watch went sold-out quickly and pleased collectors. Today, we have the second edition. Using the same bronze/blue dial combination, still based on the Divers Sixty Five, this time the brand adds an unprecedented complication to this collection. Meet the Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition.

For the first time in the Sixty Five collection (the two Carl Brashear limited editions are after all based on this watch), Oris adds a chronograph to its vintage-oriented diver. The addition of a time-measurement complication is always tricky on a diver, as the combination of rotatable bezel and busier dial can lead to quite cluttered watches (we won’t name anyone here… you certainly have some in mind). Oris was probably aware of that, this is why the new Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition sticks to the minimum – or the essential.

The dial of the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition remains true to the original versions, as only adding two sub-counters and even becoming a no-date watch! The choice has been made not to use a 6-9-12 version of the 7750-architecture but a more vintage, classic and clean two-register style – a small second at 9 and a 30-minute counter at 3. Thus, the dial keeps a very decent legibility and the purity of the original model. As the first edition, the Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph relies on a deep blue dial with rose gold-plated hands and applied indexes, both generously filled with luminous paint. The overall style of the Divers 65 collection is still present, with the same shape and layout for the hands and indexes.

As for the case, the addition of the chronograph function induces a slight increase of diameter – now 43mm instead of 42mm on the 3-hand version – and certainly a few extra-millimeters in height. The case is crafted in bronze and so are the crown, the pushers, and the rotating bezel. The bronze case will also age and gain some patina, of course depending on how the wearer will use the watch. Also, for this same reason, the caseback remains in steel (hypoallergenic). The Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph is worn on a nice Brown aged leather strap with bronze pin buckle.

As for the movement, Oris relies on Sellita and their SW-510 calibre – a clone of the reliable Valjoux 7750, yet with a new bi-compax layout. Specifications are thus known: automatic winding, 48h power reserve and 4Hz frequency. The movement is here hidden behind a plain caseback, embossed with a diver’s helmet and Carl Brashear’s mantra: “It’s not a sin to get knocked down, it’s a sin to stay down“.

The Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition Bronze Watch will be limited to 2,000 pieces, priced at EUR 4,400 or CHF 4,700. Now the main question is: will there be an Oris Divers Sixty Five Chronograph introduced at Baselworld 2018? Remember that the first Carl Brashear Limited Edition somehow announced the 42mm version of the Divers 65

  1. Perfect collector’s timepiece—-it too will be sold out—no doubt.
How attractive can a diver’s watch be?

  2. Oris should be proud of such a beautifully designed watch. I will certainly try my hardest to obtain a piece for my collection.
