Oris Divers Sixty Five Grey and Deauville Blue

Remember Baselworld 2015… One of the most discussed watches and one of our favorites was, surprisingly, a watch priced below 2,000 Euros – and not one of the ultra-complicated pieces from Patek or one of the latest Rolexes. Frankly, the Oris Divers Sixty Five is a tremendously cool timepiece, mixing perfectly vintage elements with a modern and ultra-stylish look. We showed it to you in advance before Baselworld and we reviewed it later, just to confirm that, yes, we love this affordable, simple but inspired tool watch. Oris now comes with a new iteration, following the trend of blue dials. Here is Oris Divers Sixty Five, now in Grey and “Deauville Blue”.

Introduced first with a black dial, a black bezel and cream “faux-patina” indexes, the Oris Divers Sixty Five was paying tribute to an almost forgotten vintage piece made by the brand during the mid-1960s (most likely, this watch was launched in 1965). Expect for the evolution of the size (that evolved from 36mm to 40mm), the use of a modern automatic movement and some modern, more qualitative materials, the resemblance between the two editions, vintage and actual, is obvious. It is clearly one of the most faithful re-edition we’ve seen recently. However, we know many watches inspired by vintage pieces, that simply copy-paste the look of an antique watch. And it sometimes works, it is also for certain brands, the recognition of a lack of inspiration. For Oris, this is not really the case, as first, this kind of re-edition is not usual for the brand, that mostly creates modern timepieces, and then, well you know, in this case, it really works.

The main (and only) novelty on this new Oris Divers Sixty Five is the dial. Previously available only with a glossy black dial, it now features a two-tone scheme, mixing a “Deauville blue” on the periphery of the dial (a highly 1960s colour, used for cars, furniture and clothing), circling the hour indexes, and a light grey central part. Both colours are separated by the minute track, making the use of the two colours quite balanced. For the rest, no big changes. The indexes are still painted with a creamy luminous material, reminiscent of aged indexes on vintage watches, and the 120-clicks rotating bezel is still featuring its black aluminum insert with diver scale. The bezel itself is notched and coated in black.

The case, measuring 40mm, is perfectly sized and offers a nice finishing (considering the price), with polished flanks and satined flat surfaces. The oversized screwed crown then again reminds of vintage divers. The Oris Divers Sixty Five Deauville Blue comes with two straps: a super-comfy rubber one, with a “tropic” style, and a second canvas strap, here in black. Inside ticks the Oris Cal. 733, based on a Sellita SW200, with date at 6 o’clock, and hours, minutes and seconds on the central axis. This reliable and relatively precise automatic movement is a perfect choice for such a tool watch.
