Panerai Luna Rossa Challenger Submersible 47mm PAM01039
Sailing on its nautical credentials, Panerai celebrates its role as the official sponsor of the Luna Rossa team with a diver with GMT functions inspired by the Italian yacht.
Panerai sticks to its nautical roots and Italian identity with another watch dedicated to high-adrenaline maritime pursuits. In this case, Panerai celebrates its new role as the official sponsor of the Luna Rossa, the Challenger of Record of the 36th Edition of the America’s Cup. The partnership with the Italian team is the perfect occasion for Panerai to unveil a new collection of watches directly inspired by the materials and technologies used by the yachts competing in the America’s Cup. Fitted out with a carbon fibre case, just like the new monohull of the AC75 Luna Rossa yacht, the 47mm Luna Rossa Challenger Submersible is shipshape and ready for action with sailcloth on the dial and water-resistance of 300 metres.
Carbotech case
Housed in an XXL 47mm case crafted from Carbotech, an innovative composite material based on carbon fibre, the Luna Rossa Challenger Submersible emulates the material of the hull of the AC75 and a picture of the yacht is engraved on the blackened titanium caseback of the watch. The Luna Rossa AC75 yacht has been upgraded with a new carbon fibre monohull and will make its debut in the first stage of the America’s Cup World Series in 2019 in Cagliari, Sardinia, where all members of the Luna Rossa sailing team headed by Max Sirena will be wearing the watch.
The matte black Carbotech case gives the watch a racy, high-tech appearance and displays the characteristic marbled effect produced by the layers of carbon fibres. Lighter than ceramic or titanium, Carbotech is not subject to corrosion, is resilient to external shocks and is hypoallergenic. A professional dive watch, the unidirectional rotating bezel (also made from Carbotech) to calculate dive times displays the first 15 minutes indicated with white markings. The hallmark crown bridge and lever are also crafted from Carbotech.
Luna Rossa sails and a GMT hand
In addition to the carbon fibre hull, Panerai has gone one step further in corroborating its partnership with the Italian team and has applied original grey sailcloth from the Luna Rossa on the dial. The unusual texture, with its crisscrossing weave, adds personality to the watch and will no doubt be an additional perk for collectors. Contrasting with the monochrome grey dial are touches of red, a direct allusion to the red and white colours of the Luna Rossa logo on the yacht.
The small seconds hand at 9 o’clock and the central arrow-tipped hand indicating the second time zone are picked out in bright red for enhanced legibility. Instead of numerals on the dial, eight dots and two hour markers at 12 and 6 o’clock emit an intense luminescence, as do the tips of the skeletonised hands. In addition to the small seconds and GMT hand, the dial features a narrow date window at 3 o’clock.
Manufacture movement
The watch is fitted with the P.0910/GMT Manufacture movement made in Panerai’s state-of-the-art production site in Neuchâtel. This automatic calibre has a bi-directional rotor and two spring barrels for a power reserve of 3 days/72 hours but is hidden by the titanium caseback.
The watch comes on a flexible, comfortable black rubber strap with a brushed titanium buckle. Price will be EUR 21,000. For more information, please visit www.panerai.com.
