Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1R-001 – Rose Gold Chocolate Dial – Hands-On with Live Photos
Yesterday, we showed certainly the most surprising watch from Patek Philippe since years, the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Ref. 5524. Today, there is another novelty that you might find extremely classical and iconic, a new edition of the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711. However, try to remember how this watch broke Patek’s codes, back in 1976. It was a total unexpected watch that now is an absolute classic. For Baselworld 2015, it now comes in rose gold with a (stunning) chocolate brown dial.
The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 ‘Jumbo’ is one of the most refined sports watch around and, together with the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, is a proper icon. Not only they share the same designer – Gerald Genta – but also the same spirit. The Patek however has to be seen as slightly more refined and discreet… unless it comes in a full gold package. Usually we, at Monochrome-Watches, are not the biggest fans of gold watches – at least of gold sports watches. However, here, with this combination of 18K rose gold and a chocolate brown dial, the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 becomes very elegant and desirable.
Of course the main novelty here is the dial – well, its colour to be precise, as the rest remains the same. The Nautilus keeps its superb guilloché dial with horizontal lines and the superb reflections, that creates a lively and precious face, changing from dark brown to light cream. The hands are matching the case and so do the applied indexes – meaning that both are made of 18K rose gold. One little detail that changes: the date is now circled with a gold ring.
The other new feature is, as you’ve already probably noticed, gold. This is not the first Nautilus to come with a rose gold bracelet and case – the chronograph ref. 5980 also comes in this metal – but it’s a first for the ‘Jumbo’, the most simple, classical and iconic edition of the Nautilus. For the rest, the 5711 remains technically identical to the steel edition, meaning a 3-hand timepiece with date at 3, water resistant to 120 meters and featuring the nicely finished (stamped with the Patek Philippe Seal) calibre 324.
Once on the wrist, the combination of rose gold and chocolate brown is really appealing, elegant and refined. You’d be surprised to find this watch (almost) understated. Of course, the steel edition is more discreet but the soft colour of the rose gold allows the Nautilus 5711/1R-001 to fly under the radar – at least for a full gold watch.
