A new independent brand kicking-off with a double tourbillon watch.
We are always happy at MONOCHROME to see the launch of new independent brands. When we learnt that Adrian Pedrozo, a fellow journalist – or more precisely ex-journalist as he is now fully involved in this new project – was launching his own brand, it naturally caught our curiosity. So let’s take a look at the new Pedrozo & Piriz PP01 Double Tourbillon.
A TALE OF TWO
The matrix of creation for Adrian Pedrozo is to make one out of two. His brand, Pedrozo & Piriz represents his story and therefore combines the names of his father and his mother. In a similar manner, his watches will always be inspired by two universes; kinetic art combined with an X factor. For his first creation, this X factor is architecture, more particularly that of New York as Adrian Pedrozo is passionate about the Gotham buildings and in particular about the works of Hugh Ferriss and Raymond Hood. The result is the PP01, a double tourbillon wristwatch housed in an architectural two-tone rectangular case.
For the PP01, Adrian Pedrozo opted for a clear break away from the ubiquitous round watches. At 41.5mm x 46.9mm, the rectangular case is made out of pink gold and titanium. With clear Art Deco influence, its geometric case is accented by its stepped constructions: emerging at the top, the sapphire crystal is framed by stepped flanks and two crossbars extended by angular lugs. Most surfaces are polished. No screws are visible. Turning the watch over, the flat caseback is brushed and a small window allows a view of the movement and its intricate double tourbillon differential gearing.
The hand-wound mechanism was developed and manufactured with Le Cercle des Horlogers, a manufacturer based in Les Hauts-Geneveys, a village between Neuchâtel and La Chaux-de-Fonds. It is regulated by twin flying tourbillons. They run at 21,600 vibrations per hour and a differential mechanism averages their two rates. Their ballet in the lower part of the black lacquered dial (featuring gold markers paired with openwork hands) is simply mesmerizing.
The power reserve is of 72 hours or 3 days thanks to two barrels. Although the timepiece does not have a power reserve indication, a system (via a declutching mechanism in the differential) will only make one of the two flying tourbillons run during the last two hours of remaining energy. Last, although the movement is hand-wound, it is fitted with a slipping mainspring system to avoid overstraining or breaking the mechanism when turning the winding crown.

At least this maker admits its mainly Kinetic Art. For telling the time, in the top half of the dial it will give a vague idea but in the bottom half it’s about as much use as a sundial on a cloudy day.
When you start you can’t go straight to Z. Whitgout no heritage, who is able to spend 150000 for this? And something else: it’s ridiculously huge….
