Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept – a new Mind-Boggling World Record for Thinness at just 2mm
More than spectacular, a 2mm thick (or thin) watch is simply unheard of...
Now we see quite a few spectacular timepieces every year, sometimes when they’re about to be launched and sometimes when there’s still a lot of work before it’s ready to be launched. But what we got to see at Piaget the other day, was simply unheard of, and properly mind-boggling. Piaget has created a watch with a thickness of just 2.00 millimetre. And I’m not talking about the movement, the entire watch is 2mm thick. That’s thinner than the leather strap on your watch, thinner than a Swiss five Franc coin.
Piaget has a long history of ultra-thin watches, and they have set numerous records in this field. In 1957 they introduced the thinnest hand-wound movement ever, calibre 9P, that is only 2mm thick. Three years later they introduced the automatic calibre 12P measuring 2.3 mm thick. There have been much more in the past decades, and just a month ago they launched the thinnest automatic watch, measuring just 4.3mm thick, and with that crushing the previous record for the thinnest watch that was at 5.15mm (Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic).
Piaget’s Altiplano Ultimate Concept is, of course, a concept watch and will not be for sale. The brand will be able to learn many things by developing such a spectacular concept watch, and many of the materials and techniques can find their way to the actual collection. That’s superb and I’m looking forward to seeing the effect of this, but on the other hand, I can also imagine that some of you would love to purchase this thinnest watch ever. Just imagine, they went from a 2mm movement in 1957, which was already the thinnest movement in the world, to a 2mm watch in 2018. Mind boggling…
UPDATE: we just published the long in-depth article from Xavier, our technical editor, explaining all nitty-gritty details of this spectacular watch. It’s just full of smart solutions and a new material for the case/main-plate, so a good story or the Sunday afternoon. Enjoy!

@Stuart, firstly, very nice watch! Secondly, the watch shown here is just 2mm thick in its entirety, movement, case and all.
