If you’re at all familiar with Porsche Design and its watches, you will be familiar with the origins of the brand. Coming from the dashboard-instrument-inspired Porsche Design Orfina Chronograph I from 1972, dressed in all black and with a very clear white on black dial, the current portfolio remains a testament to ‘form follows function’. With intelligent, ergonomic designs and a focus on legibility and practicality, the Porsche Design 1919 Sport Chrono Sub Seconds is now reduced in size to a welcome 39mm diameter.

As with the vast majority of watches, people want smaller or bigger watches depending on the dimensions of the watch in front of them, and of course, the anatomy of one’s wrist. This means that whenever a brand introduces a new size in an existing collection, it simply opens up the range to new clients. And that is a good thing.

The new Porsche Design 1919 Sport Chrono Sub Seconds 39mm follows the very design principles that shaped Porsche Design, and naturally, its bigger brother. The reduction in size means the case drops from 42mm to 39mm in diameter whilst retaining the height of 12.25mm. It is still made from sandblasted and polished titanium and steel and still features hollowed-out lugs extending from the middle of the case. A sapphire crystal with a 7-fold anti-reflective coating on top and a solid caseback also follow suit with the 42mm variant.

All Porsche Design timepieces have highly legible dials, regardless if it is a time-and-date only or comes with added complications. From day one, the brand has focused on this and continues to do so today. The circular-brushed dial, in black, blue, or brown, has white markings in Super-LumiNova and has central hour and minute hands that also feature a good amount of luminescent material. Naturally, a smaller case means a smaller dial, which means the date window sits closer to the minute track, and the small seconds display is slightly smaller as well.

Inside the Porsche Design 1919 Sport Chrono Sub Seconds 39mm we find the same calibre WERK 03.200. This automatic movement comes with COSC Chronometer certification, and even though it can’t be seen, the Porsche Design Icon Rotor. Running at a frequency of 28,800vph, it provides you with 38 hours of power when fully wound.

Just like its bigger brother, each colour comes on a tone-on-tone leather strap made from genuine Porsche upholstery leather and is closed with a sandblasted titanium folding buckle. The fixed curvature of the case that flows seamlessly into the strap meant that previously there was a possibility it simply wouldn’t be a good enough fit for smaller wrists. This reduced size seeks to solve that issue, which we welcome very much. The Porsche Design 1919 Sport Chrono Sub Seconds 39mm retails for EUR 4,450.
