Launched in 2015, the Roswell collection was inspired by the legendary New Mexico UFO mystery. With its case design featuring rounded dynamic curves, as well as modernly designed and finished dials, it is the most surprising of the brand’s collections. But there’s more to this watch, as with all Schwarz Etienne watches. Indeed, this piece was the first to be powered by the Schwarz Etienne ISE (irreversible Schwarz Etienne), a great-looking, in-house movement. Let’s take a closer look.
The Schwarz Etienne Roswell made its debut in 2015 to become the brand’s first watch to be powered by its Irreversible ISE calibre. The ISE is an iteration of the brand’s modular movement concept. As its name suggests, this automatic movement stands out for its reversed architecture, displaying dial-side its off-centred micro-rotor and its regulating organ. Schwarz Etienne prides itself in revealing its complications and mechanisms in an original way. This smart arrangement grabs your attention and brings dynamism to the watch’s face with the motion of the oscillator, rotor and the small sweeping seconds.
Schwarz Etienne boasts an impressive level of vertical integration. This high-end calibre is fully manufactured in-house, down to the hairspring produced by sister company E2O innovations, which shares the same facilities in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Visible dial-side, the balance wheel incorporates the SE logo. Given the rotor’s reduced diameter, winding is bidirectional for optimal efficiency. The calibre ISE 100.00 operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour with a comfortable 86-hour power reserve. It displays the hours and minutes as well as the running seconds via a small hand at 11 o’clock.
Fashioned out of stainless steel, the Roswell comes in two dial iterations: circular brushed silver or black. The dial is framed by a sloping flange with applied markers and a 12 with a geometric font. The hour and minute hands are lance shaped. The hour hand is openworked while the minute hand is faceted.
At 45mm in diameter and with elongated lugs, the watch has strong wrist presence. The crown is screw-down and protected in a shield. The full caseback is secured by 6 crews. It features a minimalistic medallion decorated with a circled R. Water-resistance is rated 5 ATM / 50m.
The Schwarz Etienne Roswell comes on an alligator leather strap. A signature of the brand, the straps are lined with bright coloured leather. The watch is secured to the wrist with a folding buckle.
