Seiko King Turtle & King Samurai “Save The Ocean” SRPF77 & SRPF79

The “Save The Ocean” concept isn’t new at Seiko and has resulted in multiple special edition models based on the brand’s most beloved watches, such as the Samurai or the Turtle. The result of Seiko’s partnership with Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s grandson, it contributes to promoting health and conservation of the oceans. This year, Seiko is back with some more “Save The Ocean” watches, based on the recently introduced King Turtle and King Samurai watches, under the references SRPF77 and SRPF79. 

The “Save The Ocean” watches are the outcome of a partnership that started in 2018 when Seiko teamed up with ocean explorer and marine conservationist Fabien Cousteau, grandson of famed underwater explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Like his grandfather, Fabien Cousteau has dedicated his life to exploring the oceans and promoting their health and conservation. Seiko contributes a portion of the proceeds to the work of the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center. Following the first editions in 2018 or this trilogy introduced in 2019, the Japanese brand continues with new models for 2021, the fourth “Save The Ocean” collection.

The new “Save The Ocean” SRPF77 & SRPF79 are based on models recently launched by Seiko, the two “King” watches. Basically, these are upgraded versions of some of the Seiko bestsellers, the Turtle and the Samurai. The idea was to provide more resistance to external aggressions with upgraded materials. Still, the cool design of both watches is kept intact, with the exception of a new patterned and manta-inspired grey-blue dial produced this year – a colour that Seiko cherishes since last year – and a new silicone strap.

The King Turtle “Save The Ocean” SRPF77

As mentioned, this year’s models are based on the “King” watches. First is this SRPF77, based on the King Turtle, meaning that it retains the classic vintage-inspired pebble look with a crown at 4 o’clock and the brushed and polished 45mm case – which is known to wear more compact than expected. However, major updates like a sapphire crystal with magnifier over the day-date complication and a new bezel with more pronounced grooves and a black ceramic insert have been applied. Inside is the calibre 4R36, a tried-and-tested entry-level automatic movement found in a myriad of Seiko watches.

New to this “Save The Ocean” special edition SRPF77 is the dial, which displays a fine wave pattern, a gradient blue-grey colour and shadowy mantras. Also, the watch is worn a newly designed silicone strap matching the colour of the dial. This edition is released as a special but not limited edition, priced at EUR 610 or USD 595.

The King Samurai “Save The Ocean” SRPF79

The second model for the 2021 “Save The Ocean” collection is the SRPF79, this time based on the King Samurai watches. The recipe is the same as above; take on of the brand’s most famous designs – in this case the Samurai – retain the same case with 43.8mm x 12.8mm dimensions, the sharp and modern shape, the same movement, and upgrade it with new, more robust material for better-perceived quality. This also means a sapphire crystal with magnifier over the date and a knurled unidirectional bezel with 60-minute ceramic insert. Inside is the calibre 4R35, the date-only version of this movement.

As for the King Turtle above, the watch gets a new grey-dial with fine wave pattern and manta decoration. It is also worn on a silicone strap matching the dial. Released as a special edition, it is priced at EUR 610 or USD 595.
