2020 Seiko Lukia Wormen Watches

Seiko’s line of women’s watches, Lukia, has been available since 1995 in Asia. Today, six models of the Lukia collection disembark in all corners of the globe. With vibrant dials made from mother-of-pearl and inspired by traditional Japanese colours and shapes, the Lukia watches are meant to encapsulate the glamour associated with Ginza, Tokyo’s upmarket district. Ginza is also home to the Ginza Wako building with its emblematic tower clock where Seiko has its headquarters. Designed as watches for everyday wear and tear, they are all powered by Seiko’s latest automatic calibre. Let’s have a closer look at Lukia.

Feminine proportions

The Lukia models are housed in stainless steel cases, some with gold-plated accents, measuring a dainty 34.8mm in diameter and 11.4mm in height. A sixth model, a limited edition with diamonds on the bezel is slightly larger and has a diameter of 35.2mm. The dodecagonal architecture of the case is surmounted by a round, tiered bezel and the cases are water-resistant to 100 metres. The multi-faceted case is polished throughout and catches the light.

Mother-of-pearl dials

The background scenery of the dial is made from a white mother-of-pearl base and, in most of the models, painted with colours on both sides of the nacre. A large floral motif emanates from the centre of the dial, almost like an origami-style flower with geometric petals. Three Roman numerals are printed on the dial (XII, IIII and VIII) complemented by eight diamond hour markers. The diamond hour markers are set in a rhomboid-shaped metallic mount with a small tail, similar to a comet. The hour and minute hands are sword-shaped with sharp tips while the central seconds hand has a blunt tip pointing to the printed track on the flange. A date window at 3 o’clock completes the package.

Six variations of the theme

The Kurenai (SPB135) has a rich cherry-red dial while the Gofun model (SPB133) features a white iridescent mother-of-pearl dial designed to recreate the powdered seashell used in Kabuki cosmetics. The blue Ruri-Iro (SPB137) evokes the deep blue evening sky and the subtler Aoshiro-Tsurubami (SPB138) with its greyish-green tones and two-tone case is meant to recall the cobblestones in Ginza’s back streets. The particularly feminine Sakura-Iro model  (SPB140) is presented in a gold-plated case and has a soft pink dial, the colour of spring. The Tsukishiro (SPB141) is the only limited edition model in the line-up and features 55 diamonds on the bezel and a more elaborate dial with pale blue and white tonalities inspired by the Moon and the city lights of Ginza.

Seiko automatic

The sapphire crystal caseback reveals the calibre 6R35, Seiko’s latest automatic movement with a frequency of 21,600vph and a respectable power reserve of 70 hours. Accuracy is rated at +25 to -15 seconds per day and the movement is resistant to magnetic fields of 4,800 A/m. This movement is also used in the recently introduced Prospex Sumo and Captain Willard.

Straps, availability and price

All six Seiko Lukia models come with interchangeable crocodile leather straps to match the colour scheme of the dial and are secured to the wrist with a three-fold clasp. The Tsukishiro limited edition comes with a special strap with a white background and light blue accents. To create this effect, a two-stage dyeing method known as Tani-zome is used; the leather is first dyed white and then the grooves in the pattern are dyed light blue.

Prices for the regular Seiko Lukia models range from EUR 1,400 to EUR 1,500 and will be available from July 2020 in Seiko Boutiques. Tsukishiro, the limited edition of 250 watches, retails for EUR 2,500 and will be available in September.
