Recently, we showed to you a tennis player, wearing quite a cool watch – and not only to show off but playing with it. Indeed, Stanislas Wawrinka this year was playing with a bold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver Chronograph on the wrist. Unfortunately, he was not as lucky as in 2015, as this year, the French Open / Roland Garros has been won by Novak “Nole” Djokovic – a tittle long-awaited for him. And of course, here again, there was a watch involved, a Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual Time Limited Edition to be precise.
This Sunday, Novak Djokovic, number 1 of the ATP World Tour, won the Roland Garros / French Open 2016, the last of the Grand Slam tournaments missing to his pedigree. Indeed, it took him 12 participations, 4 semi-finals and 4 finals to finally obtain the cup usually brandished by Rafael Nadal. Yesterday, his opponent, Andy Murray, was good, but unfortunately not good enough. And not only Novak finally won at least one tittle per majors (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open) but he also achieved to win all of them in a single year, something that happened for the last time in 1969, with Rod Laver. And we can ensure you that such an achievement won’t happen again soon. Novak Djokovic is a Master, one of the greatest of his kind, period – and he also happens to be a real gentleman, to add to the legend.

As you can see on the photos of Novak brandishing his glorious cup, a watch is strapped on the wrist – while he was not wearing it during the games. The watch is simply “his” watch, a Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual Time Novak Djokovic Limited Edition, produced to 3000 pieces. Mechanically similar to all the other Astron GPS Solar Dual Time watches, this edition has a specific stainless steel case coated with rose gold and a brown crocodile strap.

Even if battery driven, this watch has an impressive technological content, as it boasts the ability to automatically adjust to the perfect time via GPS – and as being a Dual Time, it also adjust to the local time while traveling, while keeping trace of your (also perfectly adjusted) home time. It features a perpetual calendar correct to the year 2100, a world time function (40 Time Zones), and a daylight Saving Time function. The top-feature is of course its accuracy of +/-15 seconds per month, without receiving a GPS time signal – otherwise it would be as precise as a drive from Novak “Nole” Djokovic. I just get the feeling that these players wear watches at award-presentation for the sake of sponsorship (absolutely nothing wrong with that),and not have any real emotional attachment to these timepieces (seen reports that Rafa Nadal lost his RM tourbillon created just for his sporting needs/RM’s boast for a watch to withstand straineous impacts from sports).
Mechanical watches, to many commoners, hold sentimental values. So when watches, especially the good and expensive ones, get treated barely as advertising tools by sponsored celebrities, I really do feel sad for them (watches). Maybe it’s just me.
I’m with you there MontY, I also feel these sporting celebrities are just tools (wrist) to show off the latest watch on offer. I feel these advertising wrists could be offering the latest mobile/cell phone or even kitchen sink. Wonder if they get to keep the watch or paid the advertising fee !!
I used to do the same when I was at school. Unfortunately didn’t turn out to be a major sporting celeb’. Obviously I couldn’t wear the watch during Soccer or Basketball and as soon as the game was done, I’d be at my bag looking for my watch. Just an easy habit to get into. Generally from an outsiders superficial, observational perspective, it’s easy to over analyze such a minor insignificance. I’m sure the players themselves would spend little time thinking about such novelty. Much more important things to get through..
