Honouring the late Ayrton Senna with a racing track-inspired chronograph.
It wasn’t just Ayrton Senna’s perseverance or determination for speed and exhilaration on the racetrack that got him noticed. For 15 years and right up until his untimely death, a flash of electric yellow on the helmet of the Brazilian Formula 1 Championship winner could be caught sight of as he lapped the track with a sense of grace and confidence. A nod to one of Brazil’s national colours, but also a colour symbolising aggression, youth and movement, the shot of yellow referenced in the two new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2020 models is a poignant reminder of the indelible mark Senna left on the motorsport industry.
TAG Heuer draws upon its contribution to the sporting world with two more special edition chronographs dedicated to the legacy of the brand’s longstanding partner and ambassador: a 44mm automatic and a slightly smaller 43mm quartz-powered model. Both iterations from the Formula 1 collection feature a fixed black ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale that measures up to 400km/h, distinguishing the Senna models from the rest of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 family.
The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2020 automatic watch features an anthracite dial in a sunray-brushed finish with rhodium-coated, Super-Luminova treated indices and hands for easy timekeeping in dark conditions. Black chronograph sub-dials at 12, 6 and 9 o’clock are finished in an “azurage” effect, providing chronograph minutes, hours and permanent seconds respectively. Yellow accents are designed to enhance legibility and can be found detailing the date, push-pieces, chronograph dials, strap stitching and the bezel markings. As seen in previous TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna watches, the stylised “S” motif can be seen inside the 6 o’clock sub-counter and the embossed “S”-shaped pattern embossed into the watch’s black calfskin leather strap. The band is completed with a folding clasp, a double safety mechanism and a pilot extension feature that enables the watch to be worn over the top of a thick driving suit.
Inside the stainless steel case, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2020 automatic watch – priced at EUR 2,900 – is the calibre 16 movement. Also known as the ETA 7750, this reliable calibre is widely used. It provides a 42-hour power reserve and a performance of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Utilised in IWC, Hublot and Panerai watches, the movement easily meets the requirements of COSC certification and is concealed behind a specially engraved 200m water-resistant steel caseback.
The quartz version of the Formula 1 Senna Special Edition watch (EUR 1,950) features a 3-6-9 chronograph layout offering permanent seconds, 1/10th of a second and minute functions respectively, along with a date at 4 o’clock. The watch also comes on the TAG Heuer “S” shaped steel bracelet favoured by the famous racing driver.
