TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 Final Edition

Yesterday, we introduced the new standard, modern, classic Monaco watch, now equipped with in-house calibre Heuer 02 replacing the now-discontinued blue-dial Monaco Calibre 12… The end of an era. Is it, really? Well, before permanently turning the page on the Calibre 12, TAG Heuer has a special surprise, with a new limited edition… Meet the TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 Final Edition.

As we explained yesterday, there’s a new classic TAG Heuer Monaco in lieu of the Calibre 12 model. To make things clear, TAG is discontinuing one reference only, the more modern, slightly more elegant and more traditional version of the Monaco. This means the blue dial version with a sunray-brushed finish, radial applied indexes and inside the case, an ETA/Sellita modular chronograph movement with the crown classically positioned at 3 o’clock. This model, the reference CAW2111, is now out of the collection. On the other hand, don’t worry about the vintage-inspired Calibre 11 watch, with matte blue dial, horizontal applied indexes and crown at 9 o’clock. This one is still produced.

So, in order to say goodbye to the Monaco Calibre 12, before the new Monaco Heuer 02 hits the stores, the brand unveils a new limited edition watch named “Monaco Calibre 12 Final Edition”. Don’t expect much evolution compared to the standard Calibre 12 watch though. This version is just about a different dial… but a good one!

If you know your Heuer and TAG Heuer history, a grey dial Monaco should be no stranger to you… Think of reference 1133B, the early 1970s model with Calibre 11; it featured a brushed grey dial with black sub-counters. And more recently, there’s reference CAW211B, a 2010 watch based on the blue Steve McQueen with modern Calibre 11. Here again, a lightly brushed grey dial (not so pronounced though) and black sub-counters.

Well, mix all of these elements and here you have the new Monaco Calibre 12 Final Edition.

The dial of this new limited edition is ruthenium coloured (a rare metal belonging to the platinum group, with a dark grey colour) and has the signature vertically brushed decoration. Also, the sub-dials have the traditional black opaline finish. The hands and radial applied indexes are rhodium-plated and the chronograph hand is lacquered in red – all of these details relatively faithful to the vintage 1133B and resulting in a pleasant design.

For the rest, no dramatic evolutions on this TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 Final Edition, which retains all the specifications of previous editions, meaning a 39mm x 39mm steel case, chamfered sapphire, 100m water-resistance, pushers and crown at 3 o’clock, Calibre 12 running inside – basically, a Sellita-produced 2894-2 – and a black alligator strap with folding clasp.
