The link between TAG Heuer and motorsport is simply undeniable. The brand has been, since the 1960s, one of the most active ambassadors in racing, manufacturing watches that were made to time sports cars and named after some of the most prestigious circuits or races. One of the most emblematic watches in this context is the Monaco, an icon from the 1970s that gained fame thanks to the King of Cool. Last year, the brand launched a special model that was clearly a great match, a limited edition Monaco to celebrate the appointment of TAG Heuer as official timekeeper of the Grand Prix Monaco Historique. For the 2021 edition of the race, the brand being once again the Official Sponsor, we have the new TAG Heuer Monaco Green Dial Calibre Heuer 02 Limited Edition.

This year again, TAG Heuer will be the Official Sponsor and Timekeeper of one of the most prestigious classic car races, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. The biannual Grand Prix de Monaco Historique weekend is one of the highlights of the classic car racing calendar, and its passionate community of owners, drivers and spectators relish the spectacle of historic Grand Prix racing and the warm spirit around the legendary circuit. While the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ACM is prepared this year, as the GP will take place this very weekend – 23 to 25 April 2021. More than 200 Grand Prix cars representing 50 different carmakers, with seven series spanning the periods from the 1930s to the 1970s, will compete. And TAG Heuer will be there to time the event, and also releases a special watch for the occasion.

Just like last year’s edition, this Grand Prix de Monaco Historique edition, the TAG Heuer Monaco Green Dial, is based on the “new standard” version of the Monaco watch, meaning the Calibre Heuer 02 model with an in-house movement and crown/pushers all on the right side of the case. This is the modern side of the Monaco, the vintage-inspired models being powered by the Calibre 11 and having the crown at 9 o’clock – the Steve McQueen way.

As such, the base is well-known, as we find back the classic square watch with a 39mm x 39mm stainless case, and its signature facets, the combination of polished and brushed surfaces, as well as the domed and faceted protruding sapphire crystal on top. In short, a Monaco as you’d expect it to be. As always, despite the rather compact dimensions on paper, the Monaco is a watch with great presence and a substantial height (around 15mm), but the short lugs make it relatively comfortable on the wrist.

What makes this TAG Heuer Monaco Green Dial Calibre Heuer 02 Limited Edition special is… its gradient green dial. Relying on what’s currently the hottest colour in watchmaking, TAG Heuer provides here a nice emerald green tone with a sunray-brushed pattern and a dégradé effect, where the edges of the dial are gradually changing in dark green (almost black). For the rest, the brand has decided to plays soft, with all the markers and track in white. The applied indexes and hands are faceted and rhodium-plated, using the classic radial layout found on the more contemporary editions of the Monaco. In addition to the two sub-dials for the 12-hour and 30-minute counters, a small seconds is discreetly integrated at 6 o’clock together with the date.

This new TAG Heuer Monaco Green Dial Calibre Heuer 02 Limited Edition is worn on a black alligator strap with the brand’s classic folding clasp, allowing you to set the length of the strap without holes – so you can finely adjust it to the desired length. While the execution of the strap is above suspicion, the look is a bit conservative… But you can always change this.

Under the sapphire crystal of the screwed sapphire caseback (with 100m water-resistance) is the brand’s in-house Calibre Heuer 02, a modern integrated chronograph movement with a column wheel and a vertical clutch. Also, the movement can store up to 80 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Measuring 31mm in diameter, thus nicely filling the case, it runs at a 4Hz frequency. For this occasion of this limited edition, the markings engraved on the oscillating mass and the column wheel are executed in green.
