The Laine x CronotempVs “Silver Spur” Collector’s Edition
A unique collaboration available once a year only.
We’ve recently covered the gorgeous Laine Watches V38 by Switzerland-based Finnish watchmaker Torsti Laine. And lo and behold, two weeks later, a press release about a unique collaboration project lands in our inbox. The CronotempVs Collectors, an online watch collecting community focusing on very limited watch projects, joins forces with Torsti Laine and introduces the Silver Spur.
With 16 projects under its belt since it was founded in 2009, CronotempVs Collectors have a dedicated following that gets a say in each project. Past projects include collaborations with Urwerk, Habring², Ressence and Chopard.
It won’t come as a surprise for those familiar with Torsti Laine’s work, but this unique collaboration piece is another stunning-looking watch. Laine Watches currently offers four different models, three of which are based on the Gelidus concept, and one is the Laine Watches V38, which we covered only weeks ago. The Gelidus range, which translates to “Ice Cold” or “Frosty” in Latin, comes in the Gelidus 2, Gelidus 3 and GG3 variations.
The Gelidus 2 is the second-generation model, with an upgraded and more refined case than the original. The Gelidus 3 comes with a dial made with individual parts that allow for a whole range of combinations in materials and finishing. And then there’s the GG3, which stands for Gelidus Guilloché 3. The GG3 has a dial that combines different guilloché patterns on each section of the dial. Offering such a wide range of options results in no two Laine Watches looking alike, something very appealing to collectors and enthusiasts!
The collaboration between Laine Watches and CronotempVs Collectors led to the Silver Spur, which is based on the Gelidus 2. It is a very limited watch, exclusive to CronotempVs Collectors, of course, that is available to order only once a year while supplies last. The case comes in either a 40.5mm diameter or a 42.5mm size, both measuring 11.25mm thick. The bezel is polished, as are the top surfaces of the lugs. The caseband features a straight brushed finishing with frosted cavities for the lugs. On top and on the back are sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating.
At the request of several collectors, the German silver dials of the Silver Spur will remain untreated, allowing for a unique patina to develop over time. The surface is finished with a sandblasting process and then a hand-applied circular brushing. The Gelidus 2 has applied white gold hour markers, with a few options to select for the client. The hour markers alternate between Arabic numerals and small roundels, all in white gold for this unique piece. The blued steel syringe-shaped hands contrast nicely with the dial and the applied minute ring and steel ring around the middle section and sub-dial. A subtle touch is the use of Super-LumiNova on the hands and minute track, carefully hidden out of sight (sort of) under daylight but visible under darker circumstances.
The movement for the Silver Spur is the LA18.1, which is a highly decorated and upgraded ETA/Unitas 6498 hand-wound movement. The decoration of the Silver Spur is fitted with a newly made three-quarter bridge, finished with a recessed dark blue frosting and bevelled edges. Two additional bridges are black-polished to a mirror finish. All finishings for the dial and movement are executed by hand. The hand-wound movement runs at a leisurely slow pace of 18,000vph. The power reserve is 50 hours.
The Laine Watches x CronotempVs Silver Spur comes on a special brown and silver or blue and silver two-tone leather strap and a custom presentation box. Prices are CHF 8,300 for the 40.5mm and CHF 8,800 for the 42.5mm case, both excluding taxes.
